You don't need it to solo the abyss as any class. But whatever floats your boat.

Haven't used it myself but it would be more useful than a gally for the abyss

I disagree. We obviously think differently, so it's all good.

You can keep adds off of you without having to even shoot the ogre Makes soloing it on hard as a 31 easier than having a gally which takes 7 shots as a 31
