What are motes of light good for besides cosmetic upgrades from the The Speaker?

You can buy engrams from Xur. It cost 23 motes of light and you can have a random exotic. This week it's the helm

Damn so i have a hunter and Xur is already selling the best possible Helm for an hunter. Should I waste 23 motes of light on it then? I guess it would only help if i had a titan or warlock?
