Plasma Screen HUD Burn-In

Destiny is console exclusive, which means almost all players play on a television, not a monitor. Many of these players play on plasma screens, millions in fact. The average play session of Destiny is logged by Bungie at 4 hours. I fall around that mark, and that's about all I've used my TV for lately, as I'm sure is the same for many players. This leads to a huge problem, one that may have already permanently damaged my near $3K TV, the HUD is burnt into my display. I'm a very proud owner of the "65in Panasonic VT60, and I paid a very pretty penny for it. Millions of others also playDestiny on plasmas, and the fact is no matter how "worn in" a plasma is, it is still prone to burn-in or image retention. Either can occur after a static image is left on the screen for an extended period of time, like say, playing Destiny for a few hours a day, with no other content appearing on the TV in between. From my recent average playtime, I now have a retained image of the bottom left HUD area burnt in my display; super bar, all 3 weapon slots, among blur where ammo is counted and so on. I left my TV wiping for 12 hours, and the image is still there. (Update 11/19) My TV has been wiping for almost 24 hours, and still has the HUD clearly burned in. (Update 11/20) My TV has been wiping for almost 48 hours straight. The HUD is still there, but instead of a dark gray shadow, it seems to be a tinge of pink. This is a bad sign) There is a simple solution for preventing this, and still being able to enjoy long play sessions. Battlefield 4 got this perfect right off the bat, they added the option to adjust HUD opacity in the video options. This completely stomped the possibility for image retention, and even after hundreds of hours of gameplay I never had a problem. For those who don't know, this option would make it possible to have your HUD slightly see-through so the pixels are being stimulated. This is a very big deal, and has the potential to ruin many plasmas, only from playing Destiny for an average play session, even with days in between. BUNGIE PLEASE, add a simple HUD opacity slider and put all your plasma owners at ease. Love, every Destiny player with a plasma. Please comment to get this noticed.

  • That's what you get for buying plasma. It's not Bungie's fault your television is burned, it's your fault.

  • The solution is to not use a plasma screen to play video games if that's going to be a problem for you. 65" is too big for optimal play in the first place. Get an LCD television for gaming.

  • You should've gotten an LED TV Instead

  • It's a simple fix, bagging on people for buying a superior TV "plasma" is just stupid. Write the code to be able to adjust the HUD. The demographics of the people who are able to buy this level of the TV should speak volumes by itself. The little squeakers need to settle down and play their 24 inch $200 LED POS.

LCD master race. 52" LG 1080p 60hz, 2014 model I payed $500 for it and it's the best quality you can get without chopping off an arm for a 4k tv.

What I do: at every orbit I change the game's screen boundaries. After a session a 15 minute wipe as I run off to bed. But opacity would be nice. Did turn down the contrast and now game in a darkened room to compensate.

          • Also, turn off 1 to 1 pixel mapping. It will not allow pixel orbiting to prevent burn in. Need those extra pixels to shift around somewhere.

          • Glad to see your post. I have a similar 65" panasonic plasma HDTV and it's amazing. However, I can't use it for gaming because of the image retention problem you mention. It may fade with time, just leave the TV on and after a few weeks it will improve (yes, weeks). Wiping only does so much (and is not really effective). I'm using a 32" HDTV LCD for gaming (instead of having it in my bedroom as I had originally planned). The picture is not nearly as good as the plasma, but no image retention worries. My advice is to buy a LCD for gaming. You've got to protect that plasma until OLED ultra high defs are available (and affordable). Unfortunately, no one is making plasmas anymore so you won't be able to replace it!

            • LCDs are cheap (relatively). Get one. I never went for plasma for this very reason. I will never have a plasma either.

            • In this age of gaming, it's insane when we can't control the opacity of onscreen HUD objects, set our own control scheme, adjust the audio, adjust the video, or turn off aim assistance. It's insane that Destiny does so many of these.

            • If you are such a strong gamer it would probably make sense to buy an led TV. I totally understand your point and feel for you. But it seems like you're asking for them to accommodate to a television type that is on its way out, kinda like asking Sony to put an rgb input on the ps4 because your TV doesn't do hdmi. Just make sure you are buying a purification that fits your interest instead of buying a different product that doesnt fit your interest and then wonder why it didnt.

              • I play destiny constantly, with a plasma, don't have any hud burns on mine. Maybe I'm just not in one area (where the hud will show) for as long as you? I mean, I'm usually going to orbit and/or the tower after an activity, or I'm getting on the sparrow, etc, etc. Do you sit at a location for prolonged periods of time or something? Or do you consider your activities as normal compared to other players?

                      • I run a plasma screen. I have no burn in. Sounds like you didn't have your screen calibrated and have the brightness way to high to get burn in.

                        • Yes, this is why in plasma screen & older projection screen tv manuals, it says not to play video games on it. No matter if it's destiny, a sports game COD, even espn with the ticker at the button (I've done it so I know) it will burn into your screen. Please everyone read your manuals, research products before you buy them & just be an educated consumer & there should not be any problems
