Late to the party, but yes he is alive.
His epilogue speech nearly confirms this but he has also been confirmed alive by Frankie.

The QTE better fit the situation. Halo bosses have always been pretty mediocre, at least this way it emphasized John had to struggle, and couldn't defeat him alone.
