We already had weapon crafting through Deepsight and the Enclave. We then had the mess that was Edge of Fate with weapon tiers tied to power and all the floundering Bungie did to patch it. This has resulted in a meaningless volume of items after the power boosts they’ve delivered, skipping the lower tiers completely. Now with Renegades we are seeing the re-introduction of old weapons into the tier system, a system I always felt was unnecessarily bloated from the start.
My thought is to go back to the crafting system, except to unlock a perk for a weapon, you must find an instance of the weapon with said perk. Then using Deepsight, you imprint the perk into the weapon class, allowing any future crafting of the weapon to have that perk as an option. In other words, to unlock a perk for the crafted version, you have to find a drop of the weapon with the perk. This should work as a compromise between people who casually play the game and those who find some masochistic joy of getting their “god roll” (it should be obvious where I sit in this matter). This system would also allow re-releases of past weapons to be added to their existing counterparts as unlocking new perks.
It can also allow the application of new skins onto the weapon class, as I have had my share of weapons with a cool skin but terrible perk options. It could also be compromised that to unlock the “shiny” version of the weapon, you must find a certain number of them through gameplay.
Another option is to have Masterwork trait be bound to the drop. As an example, you have a crafted weapon with the perks you want, but the Masterwork is reloading. If you want a different Masterwork trait, you must find a drop of the weapon with said trait and craft the perks onto that weapon instance.
And for those who do support this tier system, another compromise could be that the dropped weapon’s tier allows how many perk options you can craft on at one time. A low tier weapon would only have a single option in the perk column, while a higher tier allows additional options in the perk column, allowing in-the-field perk selection instead of going back to the Enclave to re-craft the weapon.
Having been a Guardian since the Beta, I just want to help by offering a suggestion instead of simply watching everything fall apart. In this case, a blending of everything Bungie has done, into something that allows it to be built upon as they move forward, instead of multiple systems in conflict with each other.
