Any tips on how to survive as a Hunter?

Edit: What does "Weighted Throwing Knife gets a second bounce" mean? I've been trying Athrry's Embrace in the shooting range and the knife doesn't seem to actually bounce. Am I misunderstanding the Exotic description? --- I've been trying to level up my Hunter, but I admit: I suck at it. I put Powerful Attraction on my cape and have plenty of Orb generation, where I'm running into problems is when Orbs aren't easy to come by, like during boss battles and whatnot. I feel like something isn't clicking, like there's a trick or a gameplay style that I'm just not getting. Or are Hunters just glass cannons and I need to learn to play around that? The build I'm using right now is Gifted Conviction with a few extra points in Class to get the Overshield, that Overshield has saved my -blam!- more times than I can count. Should I put even more points into Class for the time being? Thanks for any advice you can offer!

  • Weighted knives can already bounce off a hard surface then into an enemy. The gloves just make it so it can bounce twice before hitting an enemy and the second bounce adds heavy tracking. Not typically something that matters in pve since you're not trying to bounce knives around corners. Hunter survivability depends super heavily on dr like woven mail, frost armor and amplify. So finding a way to stack those and keep them going is key. Also its worth noting that using ascension to make clones is best since that keeps it in line of soght of the most enemies. You can also use tools like blind disoriented and the smoke bomb to give yourself some breathing room in tough spots. As you've noticed using -blam!- Orbs are really the main way to heal unless you're on solar, making health an important stat. when theres no ads and only a boss your really in a tough spot and want to have an attrition orbs weapon going. Otherwise you'll be stuck peak shooting the whole fight. Also worth noting this means the brawn modifier is especially rough on hunters since orbs won't heal much. For brawn the best healing option is facet of blessing on prismatic and silk strike super since that counts as melee kills and can be used to top off your health pretty easily and the super has a shorter cooldown. Also try to meter you transcendence and super so you always have one of them going. If you burn all your abilities at once you'll be in for a rough time. I stck to my hunter through thick and thin, but if you're trying to do hard content and hunter isn't working out absolutely switch to a class that can do it easier if it keeps you having fun. No point in torturing yourself if you're not having fun. You can absolutely keep up with the other classes, it may just feel like you have to do more to keep up. Also if you're on hunter its basically mandatory to try out some lucky pants shenanigans

  • health above 70, melee above 120, weapon above 100, whatever the rest, but 3 enhanced athletics - legs. I tend not to spec into grenades on hunter for weapons with demo or mods can gain them back quickly. the double melees on some subclasses helps counter the lack of grenade. Solar, lightweight knife (kills make you radiant) tripmine (grenade kills create orbs with firepower mod) or heal grenade, blade barrage, if you run with assassin's cowl every powered melee kills grants invis and where you can have infinite throwing knife on kills, that's a fun one or Void, graviton forfeit and do the "I can be invisible forever" build, tether super or Arc, tempest strike is fun, being amplified easier or Strand, is probably the one man army between grapples and twirly birds, super is not great for boss damage though using mods like Reaper, Firepower or kinectic/ your flavor siphon or a weapon that has attrition orbs help the orbs creation. I dont spec into class, my hunter is at least 75 heatlh, 120+ melee, 120+/- super, weapon 120+/- the others I feel are meh. I do notice a diff at 70 then again at 120 then again at 150 no matter what atribute you desire.

  • Make a warlock getaway artist build and see that you don’t suck it’s just hunters can’t kill quickly enough compared to warlocks and titans, I bet at the end of an activity you generally have more assists than those playing other classes.

    • I am strictly a hunter main and I use the exotic class item with inmost/cyrterachne. Giving me woven mail everytime I grapple. Then I run tether and the aspect that every orb i pick up will give me an overshield because of running tether. Run ascension for more damage resistance from being amplified and stylish executioner for invisibility and you're all set. Use a weapon with attrition orbs and set your siphons correctly for constant orbs. I also max out my grenade stat for constant uptime.

One of my favorite hunter builds has decent survivability if you wanna give it a try Relativism with spirit of liars + foetracer if you have one Combination blow and dodge that gives class ability Strand and stasis aspect for distraction and add clear Fragment that gives radiant on powered melee hits I use legend of acrius, so the arc powered melee gives it a 4x surge for free via foetracer, plus radiant, and trench barrel catalyst, so it’s like a nuke. Liars for extra arc melee damage For the other two weapon slots I use mint and the division, but I just wanted to share this if it’ll help you get through tough content like it’s helped me 👍 Oh and it's good to focus melee, class and weapon stats

    • Something that's not a cheat, but feels like it: gyrfalcons with the Echo of Starvation. The only downside is it locks you into void, which isn't a problem for someone too lazy to unlock stasis, prismatic, & strand on their alts 😅

      • Try the wormhusk crown or a class exotic with spirit of the wormhusk for extra survivability.

      • I’ve been gradually shifting away from Hunter since Final Shape for this reason. Here’s some general tips I’ve collected over time: Overall, accept you’re more squishy than the other classes. Play range and cover. I like to run a Solar heal clip weapon when I can, but that’s just extra for when I screw up. Solar: Healing nade is your best friend. You want it as much as possible. Arc: Combo blow is enough for lower level content, but stay on Gifted Conviction for anything above that. Void: Devour. Need I say more? (Invis is nice for panic situations, I guess.) Strand: Yikes. Woven mail will be your crutch, that’s about all you have. For Grapple builds use Assassin’s Cowl or Cyrtarachne’s Facade. For anything else, play range. Stasis: Really the only viable exotic (in my opinion) is Mask of Fealty, which means you won’t have much survivability. You’ll have Stasis shard DR and healing.

        • put better already and recuperation on your boots, keep running gifted conviction and use resist mods. That's what i do and it works for me especially since I play Hyper-Aggressive until my first through third death.

I run that build with 180 melee, 130 super, 80 class. The secret is to use ascension with tempest strike and spam. Ascension makes you amplify which is a 15%DR, IIRC, and when casting it you want to do it the projectile from gifted hit targets, as that will give you up to 50% DR. Melee kills also heals you with combination blows I think. You can also add smoke jumper set to get a DR boost each time you pick an orb.

I enjoy the hoil verity prismatic build on hunter, imo this is by far one of the best builds for the hunter. I have also tried a vexcaliber strand build that utilizes woven mail and over shield, it's very nice but decent. Arc hunter with combination blow and liars also another staple, but requires up close and personal combat style. Solar hunter with melee stat and calibans is also very fun and with a healing nade can handle sustainability very nicely. Stasis I go shatter dive with renewal grasp or mask of fealty, not the greatest but does get the job done. Void is all about maintaining your invisibility and crowd control, once you get devour proc can do great things with gyrfalcon and shadow heart, or vexcaliber. Would like to say that if you ustilize the exotics glaives for warlock and titan on hunter they can make for some awesome synergy across all sub classes, titan bubble glaive is god tier and for group play warlock glaive giving a healing turret is awesome. Hope you find what suits you best in your endeavors to finding the right hunter build for you guardian, enjoy D2 🫡🍻

FWIW, I’m no Hunter main, but I’ve done both Coil and Proving with Extinction and all the other hard modifiers and got my best score with both Arc and Prismatic Hunter. Remember boons have 0 impact on score so you want to add the melee and arc boon.

            • For PvE? Well, Hunters have the biggest "oh crap" button with invis if the only misison is to survive.
