Live service games (LSG) have taken plenty criticism for good reason. Most of it, pointed at monetization. Whether it’s battle passes or cosmetics, players associate these games with constant spending pressure that annoys rather than enhance. Yet, monetization alone isn't why so many LSG lose steam. The problem is built in the way these games misunderstand what keeps players around.
The best LSG should feel like worlds that grow, evolve, and reward a sense of permanence. When you log in after months or years, your past efforts should still matter in a way (NOT DELETING PAID CONTENT LIKE STORY MISSIONS AND CAMPAIGNS OR SUNSETTING). It should feel like you’ve contributed to something beyond a single season. That idea of CONTINUITY AND A GAME THAT REMEMBERS YOU, is what makes LSG special. The issue is too many devs have forgotten why players wanted to stay in the first place.
Modern LSG are trapped in an endless cycle of keeping engagement. Devs scramble to push out seasonal updates and limited-time content designed to keep daily engagement high. It’s a pattern that began as a business decision but it's now a creative crutch. The problem is that they’ve become the entire identity of the genre. Instead of crafting experiences that naturally sustain interest, many teams focus on manufacturing engagement as the focal point, hoping the next shiny thing will hold players just long enough for the next shiny thing.

The problem with this game specifically is that the vision has drastically changed from 10 years ago. Bear in mind community push back and little. This started out doing campaign and chasing tokens. Some strikes and nightfall and even raiding if you wanted to. Events was new and fresh with no pay to win. Cosmetics to buy if you wanted to. Overall game was about what you wanted to get out of it. There was no forced play. And there where options of what you wanted. Now its all about the portal and silly events that have pay to win. Its all about fleecing the little population that's left rather than broadening the audience and trying to create new content. We are only here to pay for marathon.
