Final Thoughts on Haunted Altars of Sorrow

Festival of the Lost is pretty much over at this point and I said I'd give my thoughts on Altars at some point, so let's do this. Aside from the bugs (obviously), I think it's great. Not just good, but great. It uses pre-existing activity mechanics/formulas from Onslaught, Gambit and regular Altars of Sorrow (in my opinion, the good parts of those activities) and combines them into one. And it works really well here, especially since the Onslaught and Altars of Sorrow formulas are very similar from the start. And the Motes are a fine way to shake up the objective from regular Altars of Sorrow while also encouraging you to "over-bank" the objective requirement for additional currency that you can later spend on defenses. It was a savory experience to do runs of Haunted Altars of Sorrow. And it also didn't force you to do anything tedious or overly complex, though it does encourage you to roam around the map sometimes for the Void Crystals that spawn. Destroying them would give you 30 whole Motes (the max amount that you can carry at a time) and the Scythe relic with 100 ammo, which is fun to use around the enemy spawns. It's a nice way to revive the Scythe relic for PvE. Honestly, while a lot of the game would often get me feeling bored after a while with how things currently are, playing Haunted Altars of Sorrow with a larger group of Guardians was a fun way to pass the time. General thoughts on FotL this year: Outside of the bugs, when it worked, I feel that Haunted Altars of Sorrow was well received with the 6-player team size. We could definitely use more of those kinds of activities in the future. Nothing complex, to the point and fun. It's always fun to play with more players when we aren't screaming at each other about "who shot the wrong symbol". After playing Red Rumble a lot, without a doubt, I think Rumble deserves to be added to the Portal as a main activity (non-rotating). And other favorite Crucible modes not in the Portal should also show up here and there outside of Cutting Edge. I think Cutting Edge is a waste of time, personally. It doesn't change anything much other than feeling the gameplay get staler faster. Oh, and a quick thought about the mask upgrades. Those perks that you could activate from the event hub. Let's be honest, most of us would agree that the one that grants Devour for picking up candy was the most-used perk by far. Devour just has that significant of an effect compared to the other ones, though I won't bash the potential utility of the other perks. Overshield/Vexcalibur, you know? If I remember right, the Devour one was more expensive than the other perks. Understandable. I'm not sure what could be done to incentivize using the other perks though. I just feel like that should be looked at in a scenario like this next time. HauntedAltarsofSorrowisbetterthanHauntedSectorscoughcough

 • I agree with what people are saying in the comments. The Dread were pretty annoying and I feel like it should’ve played more like Alters of Sorrow with the abundant of enemies. I absolutely love the Arcane Embrace and the Eerie Glows that came with some guns. I would like to see a HC and maybe a heavy weapon next season. I do however did not enjoy the Red Rum(ble) personally I would’ve liked a 6v6 mode where we have to collect FoTL motes from opposing guardians take them to a “summon circle” and summon one of the Headless, opposing team can do it as well, same rules would apply like in Red Rum(ble) they’d be super strong and would drop ammo when destroyed.

 • I LOVED Altars! But two comments - weapon weighting was extreme. Got the Arcane, the shotty, hundreds of them, a healthy amount of amount of the time (I'm not a shotgun user but it helped to feed my other energy weapons) split amount of Gunburn and Hushed but out of all my runs a half dozen Submersion crossbows. And out of the, literally hundreds of weapon drops I got, only 2 were holofoils; 1 Gunburn and the other a Hushed. Then there were the damned dread that kept blinking all over the place, back and forth. As for Rumble - not a PvP lover but I did run a few Rumbles and actually really enjoyed it, well not my first match as I forgot to change my loadout beforehand and got washed out - badly!

 • I agree with your review, mostly. The move by Bungle to reset all the Masquerade armor to zero power is a back-stabbing low-life move. That's the kind of action that pisses people off.

 • I enjoyed it a lot, but I dreaded fighting the Dread

 • My only gripe was the 3rd wave. They was way too many Dread closing glitches & ghost bullets & teleporting bosses. Outside of that it was pretty easy to have fun. For what it's worth.. I started camping round 3 with mida from high rocks so enemies couldn't even register me. Good cheese is good 🤗

 • Haunted alters was actually fun to grind unlike haunted sectors. It’s quick, actually easy and rewarding, and the goofiness I loved (the random whistle sound cracked me up). The dread part was kind of annoying but once they lowered the res timer it was fine. The use of onslaught mechanics was cool. The loot part of fotl was nice. 750 for a free t5 and being able to focus exotics for a guaranteed stat focus was nice (bug maybe but every exotic i focused capped out at 60 stats). Plus candy was so plentiful for once that I could hoard a lot and spent it last minute. Hopefully the dawning has a similar loot style. My only gripe with loot was the holofoils and I will be a permanent advocate against them being pure random chance and should have a way to purchase one. Like with fotl let us buy one for 50,000 candy.

 • I loved FoTL, I was able to farm every single god rolls I wanted for my hunter class items, and a few others for the other classes. The activity was fun, with good replay-ability, better than Reclaim IMO and the guns were nice while not crazy.

 • I had a fun time, it was great being out on the field with five other guardians, and I enjoyed the kind of chill, kind of laid back nature of the activity. HAoS had low stakes, good rewards, and a pretty fun gameplay loop. It was nice being able to build craft without worrying about Champions, I could just equip my favorites and do okay. HAoS was fun, I had fun; I sort of missed having fun in Destiny. I'd give HAoS 4.5 stars out of 5; bugs notwithstanding I enjoyed the loop, and the bugs were easy enough to avoid for the most part. I think I got soft locked twice, and both of those were fixed with a wipe, not enough for me, personally, to think ill of the event. I hope we see more iteration on the ideas, mixing and matching what works well in Destiny 2. Maybe we'll get Haunted Blind Well next year, that'd be kind of cool.

 • I liked it. Good replay-ability and good loot. Guns were not necessarily great, but easy to get with roles you preferred. I have always enjoyed 6 player activities far more than 3 player activities. I hope they get back to having 6 player match made activities.
