New Warlock Exotics and bad Trend.

Is it just me, or has Bungie been releasing really poor Warlock Exotics recently? With the advent of Eunioa, and now the new Helmet I’ve noticed that Warlock Exotics ever since Revenant have been rather Boring, despite their strength. For example, Eunioa. What does Eunioa functionally do? It’s buffs Helion… but that’s sort of all it does. There’s nothing really unique about Eunioa. No way to interact with the exotic beyond just putting it on. Compared to the exotics that released along with it, which both implement a form of Skill Expression, and reward the player with interacting with the exotic beyond just its base function. The Titan exotic has a perfect recall, and the Hunter exotic rewards you for catching your Rope Dart. And now we have the new exotics, and not only is the new Warlock helmet comparatively boring in function, having no major interactions beyond preexisting synergies, but it’s made worse when it’s limited to only being available on Strand and Prismatic, as it only works with Strand Supers equipped. I understand making it so that some benefits are locked behind having a matching super, similar to how Vesper of Radius only blinds while an arc super is equipped, but this just feels poor in design philosophy. On top of that, limiting it to just Rift is even more harsh. That tangent aside, why is it warlocks haven’t been given an interesting exotic to interact with in recent years. The last truly unique exotic we got was Mataiodoxia, which while being a buff to Arcane Needle, has a bunch of unique functions that make the way it interacts with the game more diverse than simply just placing down a rift or equipping a specific aspect. It’s just… disappointing is all. I wish we had more diverse exotics. Warlocks aren’t lacking in power. That’s not my issue. But we are kind of lacking in fun. Having these buddies shoot for us isn’t fun. It removes what interactions we can have with the game. Buffing a specific ability isn’t fun. Creating new interactions and new abilities is fun. And look, what I would consider basic exotics, like Vesper of Radius, which just buffs you’re Rift can still allow for unique builds if you find the right interactions, but limiting the Exotic based upon your super instantly limits the number of interactions you can have. And that’s disappointing.

As a Warlock main with over 5K hrs in this game, I agree that there's a bit of an issue these days with some Warlock exotics struggling to expand the dimensionality of gameplay. Sure, this can be a desired effect when you are already juggling a lot of cooldowns and are just trying to maximize uptime, but there's also a lot of fun to be had when you have something that makes you play the game differently and get rewarded for it. A lot of exotic weapons follow this ethos to great effect. Eunoia can be powerful, but doesn't make me play the game differently, or build into a playstyle. I think with that exotic in particular the issue is that you lack any interesting passive or peripheral benefit that exotics often have to add dimension. Something as simply as "defeating scorched combatants gives you class ability energy" would at the very least close the gap, but I think it could probably be more interesting than that. Look at how Briarbinds both makes an ability stronger, but also can really change the way you play the game. That leads us to Deimosuffusion. I think that this exotic will offer some compelling gameplay altering benefits in that you are encouraged to use your rift aggressively for a potentially significant reward, DoT, healing, and a reliable way to stun unstoppable champions on Prismatic, which is sorely needed right now. Keep in mind the drain and heal effects are for ANY suspension proc, at least as currently written. That means some weapons and other abilities become more viable now as a synergy tool - it reminds me a bit of Necrotic Grip in that way. It's not a jetpack, or cool new movement tech, but it does offer something interesting to explore, and definitely fun-adjacent. My 2c, but totally get the disdain about subclass limitations and the desire for more universally interesting exotics. I'm *absolutely* ready for the next Ophidian Aspect / Transversive Steps. :)
