Greetings fellow Guardians and hopefully Bungie! Many of you likely are aware that Windows 10 has reached its end of support. Some might be able to claim an Extended Security Update hence leaving room to see whether Windows 11 become more desirable and leave time for Linux software and tools to be further enhanced to allow for near seamless transition away from Windows. Currently my desktop is running Windows 10 with ESU and my laptop is running Linux Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS. Today I thus wanted to download Destiny 2 unto my laptop to go see how is Festival of the Lost whilst away from home and see how things are going this year around. I hence started the download and went to search up which version of Proton to use or if I had to go through some hoops with Wine/Bottles. Landing on the Bungie Help article I was absolutely disheartened to see that not only is Destiny 2 unfortunately not supported on Linux, but that players who attempt to work around it will be met outright with an account ban. The reason to this was speculated by another Linux user into a Steam Community post to be done so to limit cheaters into the Destiny ecosystem. This excuse holds little to no ground has Destiny 2 has had cheater issues within Crucible and likely all PvE ever since landing unto PC and even with the introduction of BattlEye back in 2021 in Season of the Lost (S15) cheaters have remained largely present as proved by the Desert Perpetual Contest mode and the many videos and post made by players. As a result of all the explained above, I believe it is crucial that Bungie and Sony take steps to reflect on their aggressive stance against Linux users and reflect on the effectiveness of BattlEye and whether to phase it toward a detection tool which forward to a security team or outright removing it due to its apparent lack of effectiveness to the promise we were made back in 2021 and its low impact on the cheating population. To this end I also include a poll with this post to gather general sentiment around this topic. Thank you for reading to the end! Addendum: I will update this post to clarify points as I interact in the replies below!

It’s the final countdown (oh oh-oh oh) - old

Destiny 2 has minimal support as it is, which is continually showing through the multiple issues there are with the game. Expecting resource to be put towards supporting Destiny 2 on linux at this stage of D2’s life isn’t being realistic.
