I Wonder About the Possibilities for Weapon Traits/Perks... (spontaneous idea for future weapons)
So, I got to play around with more Submersion rolls since it seems the drop rate for it was increased for this event. Played around with different combinations of Bolt perks and traits, seeing what clicked or didn't. Interesting ideas were entertained for builds. Chill Clip and Explosive Bolts is an awesome one.
But then I looked at my Vault. I saw Stochastic Variable, the Omolon FWC SMG in there with Phase Magazine as a Magazine perk. I started thinking about how one perk/trait on a weapon can affect how you choose to use certain weapons. And when my mind went to thinking about how similar Phase Magazine, which wasn't a main trait, was to Bolt perks, which also aren't main traits, my mind took off.
For our crossbows, Bolt perks can go from basic benefits to crazier things like DoT (damage over time) when struck into a target, chunky delayed explosions, and even something crazy like dealing extra damage for refunding ammo (a wording I usually only associate with the Eyes of Tomorrow exotic rocket launcher).
Now for Phase Magazine on Omolon SMGs, it doesn't really change the way you use the weapon all that much. It changes the damage and rate of fire to closely match Precision Frame SMGs. Except, that's all that it changes. In the end of the day, it is still a Lightweight Frame SMG that you are using with all the other stats and tuning that a Lightweight Frame SMG normally has from range, stability, handling, accuracy, aim-assist, etc. It still feels different from a Precision Frame SMG and you will feel it. And as long as you are within the effective range of your Omolon SMG, it honestly feels like a good kind of different. Like taking the consistency of high rate-of-fire weapons when the shots start landing and putting it on a lower rate-of-fire weapon. That kind of feeling. It's hard to describe.
And there lies the problem with Phase Magazine. It also doesn't increase the range of your weapon. The Omolon SMGs that it appears on do not have very impressive stats compared to your everyday SMGs and they are technically all legacy gear. I'm sure it would be pretty different if we had an Omolon SMG that could benefit from the tier system as it would certainly have more range built into the weapon with access to range mods. As for right now, if you tried Phase Magazine against a competent Precision Frame SMG user, just don't. If they backpedal, you will be punished for it.
It is still a cool concept to have something like a Magazine or Bolt perk change a weapon so drastically. Maybe we don't have to stop there? Maybe future weapons, even existing archetypes, could see something interesting done with them. The Destiny 1 Focused Fire trait for auto rifles could be reintroduced as a Magazine perk... if you're fine with SUROS Regime already having it as a trait. Maybe that's a bad example. Or maybe make a Magazine perk that just increases the rate of fire and decreases the damage like the opposite of Phase Magazine.
Or a weirder idea, make a Magazine perk that leaves small marks where the bullets land that the wielder can see through walls for like 2 seconds. Like if you shot an enemy, it doesn't highlight the whole enemy, just where they got shot and the mark sticks to them. You could also limit the amount of active marks if there is a concern for marking too many things at once.
I'm just thinking that the middle perk tree for weapons could be really expanded upon. Could be cool, Bungie.
