Destiny 2

Discuss all things Destiny 2.

At this point, I believe the only thing that can safe Destiny as an IP is a full on REBOOT!

And I don't say that lightly. Destiny 2 has too many fundamental flaws to continue running long-term and growing. * We have an entirely incomplete story gap between Rise of Iron and Beyond Light by now. * Gameplay-wise the game has not innovated beyond the "we added some subclasses" and "we added class abilities on D2 launch". * Guns/Weapons feel basically the same. Only once every 2-3 years we get actually a new weapon type. Remixes of existing weapon types even less so. * For most, the Tier system for gear doesn't work well enough to be considered "a good improvement of depth". * Tier sets with abilities we basically did already before with Gambit prime and it wasn't picked up until Edge of Fate as an idea again. * Story-wise again, the game has run its course with its Light and Darkness saga (a saga I want to add, should NEVER have ended, since basically Destinys entire core idea was built on the "light versus darkness" theme). * Refusal to use story aspects and themes beloved by the community (I just say SIVA here and let it be done with. I commented already enough on it as examples...) * Repeating design patterns and removal of content (especially seasons) without summaries for the season stories added in turn to keep the story integrity. Just to name a few of those fundamental problems. So, why do I say we need a reboot of the IP? It is actually quite simple. So that everything can be built from scratch! At first this will sound like a horrible idea. But think about it. Destiny Rising, as a NET-Ease licensed game, did took a different turn on the universe of Destiny. With their own canon and lore. I say, Bungie should do the same. Start again with the premise of Destiny 1, perhaps even prior in setting. Have the story, for instance, start in the Dark Age. Instead of a Guardian, you start as an apprentice among the Iron Lords. Over time (and expansions) the story moves to the first city age. The push into the system to reclaim territory. The Invasion of Crota on the Moon. Twilight Gap, etc. All those great, major lore conflicts as major plot points but all with a different, cohesive take in a DIFFERENT TIMELINE/UNIVERSE VERSION. This allows Bungie for greater possibilities. And I want to say, it's not the first time MMORPGs and Live-Service Games have done this. Helldivers 2 is set after Helldivers 1, but the premise basically allowed the Studio to re-tell the same story themes AGAIN in Helldivers 2. We have the Cyborgs/Automatons, we have the Bugs, we even have the Illuminate since roughly a year. And they still want to fight over the Galaxy, with Traitors among the Super Earth population aiming to overthrow their own government and establishing peace between their factions. Another example is World of Warcraft, where they made a temporary timeline jump after Mists of Pandaria with the Warlords of Draenor expansion, resulting in a re-telling of the "Fall of Draenor" era of the story, but with a different outcome, that affected the main universe timeline (to keep it all within a single game). The options and potential ARE THERE. As for the gameplay, Bungie could change it up. Keep what works well, innovate/improve on the things that don't. For example, Grapple from Strand could become a default grenade on every subclass, making it a general "power pick" feature in exchange for less damage. They could remove 1 slot from the emote wheel and add a "consumable" slot as well, to give the game more depth for cool things to use. Class abilities and class identity could drastically evolve! Combat Sparrows could become a default staple option for vehicles in both open world and gameplay. They could even change Art Style, if they would wish to. And yes, I am fully aware that a reboot would require Destiny 2 to go into maintenance mode for 3-6 years at least, especially if Bungie would use a different game engine (versions). But long-term, this might be the only way to innovate and revitalize the franchise (and it's playerbase numbers) to old levels and beyond. A clean slate with new options and new, different possibilities for favored story themes to return and play out differently. Imagine for example fighting Oryx in Kingsfall with Spaceships instead of guns...

  • I like what you are saying. Here are the issues- at least from my understanding and research/ and concerns. 1. What does maintenance mode for D2 look like? Is that maintenance every week? Is that - it’s shut down for long periods of time? Any shut downs of an 8 year old game probably looses lot of players. 2. Making a new engine and if you then remaking D1 and D2 and new content- as you suggest that story wise is before D1- plus potentially changing core systems like how abilities work, or art styles is probably closer to 7+ years. That’s without setbacks. You are completely right- it would have to be on a new engine, as no not get the current (technical) issues all over again. So how May players are going to wait, say to be generous- 4-7 years, just to replay a currently (11-8) year old game again, along with some extra new content? On top of- whatever access and or content is like for a maintenance mode of D2. The better option is, IMO, a studio within Sony makes a D3, on a new engine. That’s the time to change up art styles, or update the abilities and lore/ story. Not to reintroduce that in two past (as already happened and currently happening) games. That would be a fresh start. The issue is- even if they started building an engine and concept now, that’s 5-7+ years away. Even if it was on the lowest timeline of say 5 years, that means it launches in 2030. That’s very likely a completely new audience to target- at least for the core community. I am sure some of us who have played D1 and or D2 would come back, but how many? Anyways, that’s just my take.

    • 2 words Death spiral Acknowledged by Sony & bungie when asked about destiny's future, verified by 2 trusted sources. Over a year ago. Nothing has changed their minds, infact failing sales & retention back up the planned end.
