I've been a longtime player, since D1 Day 1. I've tolerated a lot in my time, and forgiven A LOT. Volatile Shield Tradeoff is one of the only things that has me upset enough to chime in, and ask for its removal.
It makes for an unappealing gameplay experience, especially in Fireteam Ops, when random team members don't recognize the debuff, or blatantly ignore you.
This was a big miss by the design team, and creates a lot of negative ill will towards other players, and toward the game itself.

Volatile Shields does a few things. The first is that it increases your shield capacity enough that the amount of damage required to break it would have killed you outright without the modifier. The second is that it gives you a chance to not die. If you have restoration or banner of war up, you get right back up as if nothing happened. Devour will even work if you get lucky and something you damaged dies while you're down. If you don't have persistent healing or an aware team mate, you can activate your super, or pick up an orb. If you have the right fragments selected, you can also pick up a firesprite or void breach. If all that fails, you can explode for massive damage. It is a boon in every way. I don't understand why everyone freaks out about it. It's a first pick modifier for me if it aligns with my build, for instance this week with solar hunger.
