I've been a longtime player, since D1 Day 1. I've tolerated a lot in my time, and forgiven A LOT. Volatile Shield Tradeoff is one of the only things that has me upset enough to chime in, and ask for its removal.
It makes for an unappealing gameplay experience, especially in Fireteam Ops, when random team members don't recognize the debuff, or blatantly ignore you.
This was a big miss by the design team, and creates a lot of negative ill will towards other players, and toward the game itself.

at least in fire team ops theres a chance youll get defused why its in solo ops quick play is beyond me

Edited by ACROCANTHUS: 10/14/2025 7:31:38 PMThe modifier literally increases your shield so much that the damage it takes to pop your shield would flat out kill you. Any time you get volatile shielded, you would have flat out died without the modifier. It's a second chance to live. (Just read the patch notes. It lets us attack with guns and gives us devour now. The modifier is insanely broken now)

💡 How to Revive Destiny 2? Give Us the “Exotic Heart”! Everyone keeps talking about how to “fix” Destiny 2 — less monetization, more content, better balance. But what if the solution is the opposite? What if Destiny needs to become overpowered again? ⸻ 🩸 The Concept: The Exotic Heart Every Exotic weapon and armor piece could have a chance to gain an Exotic Heart — an ultra-rare, mystical upgrade that takes the item to a whole new level. These Hearts can’t be crafted, focused, or targeted. They’re pure RNG, incredibly rare drops — the kind of loot that makes you scream in disbelief when you finally get one. ⸻ 🔥 Examples: • Hard Light – Exotic Heart: Kills trigger weakening explosions. Kills on weakened targets cause an additional blinding explosion. Also: no damage falloff. • One-Eyed Mask – Exotic Heart: Keep all original perks, plus a permanently active radar, even while aiming. ⸻ 🧠 Why This Could Work Destiny 2 has become too predictable. Everything is balanced, controlled, and carefully tuned. The “Exotic Heart” system would bring back mystery, excitement, and prestige. It would give players something legendary to chase again — that wild dream of finding the perfect, one-of-a-kind version of their favorite Exotic. In short: ➡️ More chaos. ➡️ More fantasy. ➡️ More Destiny. ⸻ 💬 What do you think? Would this system be genius or completely broken? Would you love the idea of your favorite Exotic having a hidden, god-tier version out there in the wild? Or would that level of RNG and power creep destroy balance? And honestly? If Destiny is going down, let’s go out with a Gjallarhorn moment — a final, glorious explosion of chaos and fun that reminds us why we fell in love with this game in the first place. 💥

It would be better if it had a "Guardian Down" or "Help" icon/waypoint to let people know they are supposed to do something. Like gears of war or battlefield when people are downed. I mean, we already have one for reviving Guardians, just make one that says "Defuse!"

Volatile Shields does a few things. The first is that it increases your shield capacity enough that the amount of damage required to break it would have killed you outright without the modifier. The second is that it gives you a chance to not die. If you have restoration or banner of war up, you get right back up as if nothing happened. Devour will even work if you get lucky and something you damaged dies while you're down. If you don't have persistent healing or an aware team mate, you can activate your super, or pick up an orb. If you have the right fragments selected, you can also pick up a firesprite or void breach. If all that fails, you can explode for massive damage. It is a boon in every way. I don't understand why everyone freaks out about it. It's a first pick modifier for me if it aligns with my build, for instance this week with solar hunger. -
Ya if I see haste or vsto I skip that week/day I'm not goin to play if I'm gonna get punished for playing
-
Anything with haste or VS I don't even play that day. They're annoying AF
I've been a longtime player, since D1 Day 1.
Just get to the post, bro. say your problem. holy traveler, bro. "I've been a player since the pre-super alpha concept art phase!" No one cares, brah.
-
This modifier and other un-fun and annoying modifiers were clearly designed by sadists (who don’t actually play the game) for masochists…
-
They don’t care if you’re a longtime D1 player. I can take a good guess that nobody who worked at Bungie at that time still works there.

I think the modifier is fine in something like conquests where you are usually communicating with others and playing as a team but in matchmade activities I just orbit the moment I notice its active. When I'm playing matchmade general portal activities I don't want to have to have my nose right up the blueberries behinds just so they can disarm me because my health went critical, I just want to run around and kill stuff and if I do die its w/e.

Edited by Magiscene: 10/14/2025 12:35:37 AMI don’t like it because my teammates never defuse me. Now due to low pop I never get teammates to ignore me needing defused.
-
I don't mind it in conquests. Everyone mostly understands the need to monitor each other and do help. It does not work in Reclaim. People are usually split among different mini bosses, and it may not be possible to go to a downed teammate. At the most you can stick with one teammate and watch out for them. The big annoyance is that they do not make the broken shield indicator distinct enough. I get a nice fat message saying someone needs help. But the icon is easy to miss among all the explosions happening on the screen. Just locating where the teammate is, often takes a couple of seconds enough to make you miss going to them in time. It is similar to the issue I have with Altar of Sorrows on the moon. The current icons make it hard to figure out where the next nightmare is coming from. They went from a nice orange and distinct icon to a bland white one which is hard to notice. In the end I just avoid playlists which have it on rotation and go to lfg.
-
I leave every activity that has it if I didnt notice it before launching. F that modifier.
-
GL making them redo the mods for the Hypernet conquest. It's the counter-mod to the brawn and extinction stakes, therefore the lifeline in that PitA.
-
Dawg you’re cooked if that’s what upsets you 🙏 good luck in life homie
-
Or going into fireteam but you end up solo. This volatile trade off really sucks then. No one to heal you.
