The sandbox changes are extremely tone deaf

The main thing that stuck out to me was the nerf to thunder lord. First of all, thunder lord is not overpowered or an outlier to begin with. The DP contest was the first time it was seriously used in end game content in years. You know why that was? Because of the ammo economy. It was the only weapon in the entire game that was able to combat your damage sponge bosses. Don’t get it twisted, it wasn’t used by everyone because it’s OP, it was used by everyone because it was quite literally the ONLY option. It was impossible with any other weapon. You guys seem to have a really hard time differentiating between high usage of a weapon because it is too good, and high usage of a weapon because everything else is so bad. The thunder lord nerf will make it completely unviable for the upcoming contest. Next, Lord of Wolves. Another weapon that was necessary for every team to clear DP contest - NOT because it’s too good, but because there was no other option. This is the exact same deal as thunder lord. Instead of nerfing the only thing that allowed people to just BARELY clear DP contest, maybe you should add other options. Next, Grand overture. This nerf came out of nowhere. Not only was no one using this for ANYTHING - the last time it was seriously used was during contest sundered for Zoetic Lockset because YOU guys released the dungeon BUGGED where the boss would not take crit damage. Additionally, just like Thunderlord, grand overture is primarily used due to its good ammo economy. Its damage is nothing special, and it only ever sees usage in long damage phases. Nerfing its ammo economy renders it useless, since that’s the only reason people use it. Next, Queenbreakers Yet again, a nerf that makes no sense. It was only good last season because of particle deconstruction. Now, it doesn’t even get close to topping the charts for damage. Even on the off chance that any team was considering using QBs for DP epic contest, any consideration is now gone. These changes are oddly reminiscent of you guys nerfing solo ops… you guys nerfed the one activity we found was the most efficient to level, instead of buffing loot in other activities. You guys make it more and more clear every day that you are no longer a group of devs who make games that YOU want to play. I doubt even 1% of you play your own game regularly. I doubt even a single person at Bungie is in tune with the sandbox at all. Your downfall has been quite the thing to watch.

  • As a Warlock, I want to chime in and say that the buffs look pretty good, I'm a big fan of the buffs! But the nerfs sort of sap a lot of my interest, because how long until those buffs get rolled back anyway? It feels sort of like regular gamers are being punished for the gameplay of streamers. Streamers used Thunderlord in DP, so regular gamers are getting their Thunderlords nerfed; Streamers talked about how powerful Flechette Storm was this season, so Flechette Storm got nerfed; Streamers complained (understandably) about running Solo Ops in a loop, so Solo Ops (almost) got nerfed. Getting excited about Ash and Iron was already kind of hard just due to the possible pending gear reset, and there was nothing in those Sandbox changes to up my excitement level. Featured Gear is staying in the game, there's been no mention of changes to the economy, no mention of changes to leveling speed, it feels like player pain points aren't being addressed, instead we're getting nerfs to Strongholds. I worry about the decision making process at Bungie right now. Who was asking for Matterspark, or Featured Gear, or Not-Swap? They feel like an attempt at load-bearing inefficiencies, like they're a way to shoehorn us into playing the game a certain way, and it was the freedom that brought be to Destiny 2 in the first place, the build crafting, the hero moments, we're losing some of that. It's not the nerfs themselves that bother me, it's the thinking that led to them, it's the feeling that Bungie thinks we're playing the game the wrong way.

  • Bungie keeps using the words build crafting but fails completely in making it easy to do or research. Then they move the goalposts for builds and make tweaks that destroy existing builds. Then they wonder why people send hate their way. Please catch a clue. Then they create and promote Portal where those menus were never needed. And provide another excuse saying it is to provide loot without visiting vendors. Excuses are like butts everyone has one and they all stink. Not necessarily tone deaf. More oblivious and completely mismanaged.

    • We use the weapons that are the most efficient. They get nerfed to the point of being useless, so we move onto the next-best thing, which gets nerfed, then the next-best thing, and so on. After a while, everything’s kind of trash.

        Bungie will never learn. Targeted nerfs like this will just kill the game even more. All most everything nerfed was used during contest DP. They need to stop doing this crap or the game will never recover. I hope the community does what the helldivers community did when arrowhead kept nerfing everything, so they boycotted the game till other stuff was buffed and nerfs were reverted.

      • A game developer this tone deaf deserves all the bad publicity coming to them and to fail, the remains of their studio absorbed by the parent company. Truly sad to see a once great company once a model for innovation, epic storytelling and gameplay to literally self destruct doing everything but what their once loyal fans wanted.

      • A year ago I probably would've disagreed about the assumption that the devs don't play the game. But it has got to be so damn true now that I don't have any doubts that majority of the people spearheading these changes play a max of 4-5 hours a week playing the game, outside of work hours. The most recent example from a long list I could rant forever about; I collect every triumph in the game. I never did the fabled campaign instead I went straight to mythic after my first playthough and the raid came out. Completing the fabled time latch missions that are matchmade was such a painful experience. First of all, the triumph makes you play every mission again on fabled, but if you dont want to solo every one or you simply don't want to take the time to look up where you start the mission (since for some reason theres no mapmarkers telling you where to start them on Kepler) then you have to RNG getting the mission you need. But it gets even worse, since other people are doing this too, you constantly get people joining and leaving in a darkness zone in these missions, essentially softlocking/gatekeeping the mission because when they join they spawn dead, and if they leave before you revive them you wipe to light fading. This wasn't a one off experience this was happening consistently on every mission I tried to matchmake, keep in mind that we are only about a month after the DLC dropped. This...this is just one example of the people making this game not being in touch with the communityand how the community will interact with the game. I feel like most average players could've given enough foresight into this specific thing being a problem. Just like all the current players are saying most these sandbox changes are BS.

      • Thanks a lot Mr. Don't over deliver guy. Why can't they just buff other things instead of always being the fun police. Meh whatever, having more fun on Destiny Rising anyways. Seems like they actually listen to the player base.

        • Bungie is listening. Listening to who? These nerfs are crazy, you're game is circling the toilet with even the most diehard players i know struggling to defend it. You put out the twid with some fantasic changes about levelling and portal rewards, which is a massive W, which i MUST add the community left still playing really needed. Then you nerf stuff that really isn't that op. Just who is listening because it feels like nobody is. You're genuinely walking on thin ice, so tread carefully.

          • Perhaps Sony should take Destiny away from Bungie and give it to NetEase? Seems like Bungie only want Aztecross and Esoterickk to continue playing the game.

                  • There’s so many underused Exotic weapons, why on earth would they nerf the ones that are working? Buff other weapons to make players use those more! We need more buffs not nerfs. I just don’t understand their logic…

                    • I dunno why they took aim at the Tarrabah-Peacekeepers combo. It's great for DPS, sure, but I don't think it's beating out most of the Exotic heavy options.

                        • Seems to me and others that the key weapon nerfs seem to be done for the epic raid. Those key weapons helped the 30% legit players beat the raid or were banned from worlds first like outbreak. So Bungie is making it even harder to legitimately beat it epic raid then for “normal” epic.

                        • I was thinking the same thing. Sad to say, but I really did try to look at it from a different view but kept coming back to this is not enough, not what players are asking for, not good enough to keep and attract new players. Sorry, but this is exactly what I expected and I did try to look at this as a positive step, it just does not go anywhere near enough to be a real positive. Bungie ne4rfing things like Thunderlord that was not even close to being necessary. Nerfing things because they are over used and reversing the melee is 100% at the new stat of 70%, just a another nerf.
