Hello everyone,
I am a nobody, but while sitting at work I thought about the Portal and if I could try to balance it what would I do if I was Bungie. So I thought, "why not post my idea on the forums and see what other people think?" I assume nothing would come of this, but here are my thoughts on how the Portal might be able to be a bit more balanced and rewarding. Please let me know your thoughts on this idea and if you like it, hate it, or think it needs more tuning.
The Grind - Solo Ops and Fireteam Ops- (up to 400, and soon to be 500)
Right now, as many are aware, Solo Ops is the best way to grind and level up when it comes to time invested. I feel like Bungie is going backwards with their last TWID in reducing the power by 1 in Solo Ops compared to Pinnacle and Fireteam Ops Rewards. My thoughts are based on looking at clear times on average currently to determine reward lengths to assign to each activity. Solo Ops tend to be 5-10 minutes if I remember correctly, and I feel like this is a good span to be worth 1 reward drop. Maybe a number like 8 would serve well for my example for Fireteam Ops, but more on that soon.
I believe that Solo Ops should reward 1 completion reward per activity (Plus any bonus rewards like getting B or better and the bonus rewards you can earn that get placed on activities throughout.) I believe however that the power given by these drops needs to remain as is. (I've been playing on GM difficulty and usually have a +3 Drop so ill use that as a standard for this.) For the most part keep Solo Ops the way it is as I think it remains balanced in my idea by keeping it the same. Moving on to Fireteam Ops though, this is where I think a change is needed.
Fireteam Ops activities tend to be 15-25 minutes for a strike or battleground and from what I've seen activities like Coil and Onslaught tend to be closer to 30-60 minutes depending. (With the longer activities moving to Pinnacle this point won't really focus on those.) If we follow the 8 minutes thinking from prior, I would say I think that Fireteam Ops should reward anywhere from 2-4 (Maybe 2-3) completion rewards depending on how long the average is in completing said activity, but I think these are the rewards that need to be at -1 compared to Solo Ops. This way you can spam Solo Ops if you like for those +3's in 1 slot, or you can play longer into Fireteam Ops and be rewarded with more drops but at -1 so you could get 2-3 or 2-4 +2's instead to balance it out. (Again, rewards i feel should be more based on what the current average time of completion looks like to set a standard.)
-Pinnacle Ops - The Grind from 400-450 and soon to be 500-550
My thoughts on Pinnacle Ops are that if you are playing harder difficulties on these I feel like your time should be rewarded with more of a guarantee instead of extra loot. I think in general if not already Pinnacle Ops should have higher rates of dropping Prime Engrams as I feel like this is supposed to be similar to End Game type of content, or the most time investment required. But when in GM or higher I believe Pinnacle Ops activities should always drop a Prime Engram as one of the completion rewards. (Perhaps keep additional drops having a chance to also be Prime for multiple Prime's sometimes?) This way when you get to that soft cap where only Prime Engrams can level you, you have a solution that you can grind to continue getting to that hard cap instead of just grinding random activities in hopes of a Prime Drop. Of courese I'm not saying remove the chance for Primes in other categories. Make sure to keep that so you can still get them randomly while in Solo or Fireteam Ops, but I feel like we need somewhere we can play activities to make sure we are always making progress in our power level increase if we want to continue moving that needle forward.
As a bit of an add on, I also feel like all Pinnacle Ops activities should have some sort of bonus loot (B or higher bonus) on them so you can try to grind out some worthwhile weapons or armor while also having the best chance at getting higher level gear. (Looking at you Mint Retrograde!) I still don't know how much to tweek Pinnacle to make this worth while, but I think having the guaranteed Prime as a completion would make Pinnacle Ops more popular even with nerf hits to the number of reward drops since you continue to have that feeling of progress.
