Good evening everybody, this is Aifos coming to you alive from Mugen Academy! What a perfectly normal, and not at all suspicious school, don't you think? As you may recall, I've been watching Sailor Moon, but Sailor Moon is a very long show, so I'm still not done with it. As a matter of fact, I've just wrapped up Season 3, aka, Sailor Moon S!
When I finished Sailor Moon R, aka Season 2, I was a little concerned. It felt like R downplayed a lot of the things I liked about the first season, while also bumping up a lot of the stuff I didn't like. Thankfully, things bounced back in S, and so far, it's actually my favorite season so far! Wonderful!
But okay, I'll do a quick mention of my thoughts on R, here we go!
-I liked Ail/An. They had a fun double life thing going on with Usagi, where they all went to the same school in disguise, but were mortal enemies on the battlefield and had no idea. I also liked how they weren't actually evil, but were just trying to survive.
-Moonlight Knight was dumb, but Usagi having her memories of Sailor Moon while Momaru didn't have his memories as Tuxedo Mask was a really fun dynamic.
-Chibi-Usa was a great addition to the team. She had a fun dynamic with the other characters, a genuinely touching story, and was just a fun character all around.
-All the villains on the Black Moon Clan were gross, which is a big part of why R was dragged down so much. Wiseman himself was fine, but everyone else... Bleh.
-Chibi-Usa's role as the Black Lady (-blam!- needs a better name) was great in theory, but that Black Lady turned into an adult was really weird. It would've been more effective if Black Lady remained a child. Being turned into an adult made her feel like a separate character from Chibi-Usa, lessening the emotional impact of them being the same person.
-The movie was... Fine. It reminded me of the Dragon Ball Z movies. Like DBZ movies, it started off with some really great character scenes, but after introducing the threat, the entire movie was just one big fight scene. Not bad, but had more potential.
Now, onto Sailor Moon S!
Right from the get go, the villains had a lot more intriguing of an aesthetic this time around. We had the spooky lab, and the weird & offputting sequences of Daemon Eggs bonding to objects... Which was then counterbalanced by the fact that most the Daemons were incredibly silly. One of them made "vrrrooom" sounds, one of them ran away from the fight at the first sign of danger, one of them told the Sailor Guardians to take out her allies first because she was reluctant to fight in the first place, one of them (after just murdering someone) stopped in front of one of the characters and told her if she wasn't feeling good she should go to the hospital... It was great.
The higher levels of fanservice in R had been toned back down and while there still wasn't as much emphasis on the slice of life stuff as season 1, there was a good amount of it, as Daemons would often target individual people. The thing that really sold me for S, though, was the introduction of Sailor Uranus, and Sailor Neptune. We'll go in more detail below, but gotta love me some edgy antiheroes.
But okay, let's just jump straight into spoilers below!
