Catalyst quests have always been an iffy story, especially since they stopped doing them just because they are such a GRIND to get. Without the seasonal pass boosts, these quests can sometimes take several weeks to complete of non-stop Vanguard if you dislike the PvP side of Destiny and/or don’t want to play higher Nightfall difficulties. However now there’s a new problem: the Portal. It’s designed, from what I can tell at least, to replace the Vanguard tab. It has most of the same features with even more functionality. Except one little detail: it’s not Vanguard. It can’t progress Catalyst Quests, which are grindier than ever now, especially since you first have to get the weapon you want from the Exotic Archive before you can even start on the quest, which requires an Exotic Cipher, a decently rare resource if you’re not going to spend a day grinding every weekend just to get the Xenology one. Personally, I’d rather these be random drops, because it’s the same situation as the Necrochasm: it’s nice to have it guaranteed, but it’s so grindy that it’s not worth it. But the fact that I can’t use the fun modifiers in the portal to at least enjoy this grind a little bit more makes it 10x worse. Especially since, as far as I can tell, Destiny is trying to redesign to make it more accessible to newer players. The new armor system is a lot clearer on what each stat does, Exotic Ciphers are used for focusing armor you want instead of gambling and grinding a Legend Lost Sector for one, no more grinding every vendor just for one or two things… etc. They’re making the game less of a time sink and allow people with lives to enjoy what Destiny is without having to spend hours just trying for one thing, allowing people to play other games and spend time with their families. But, these damn quests have been left unchanged for multiple years now with the community’s distaste in them, and the last year was extremely bad with them because of the lack of Catalyst Quest boosts in the pass. These things are a neat little relic of the past, but they seriously need to go. Or at least have their requirements cut down to like a 1/3 or something. Like currently, the Tommy’s Matchbook Catalyst requires 200 AR Multikills, 100 AR Guardian Defeats, and 100 Points. When playing Vanguard, you get… 1 point for beating a Vanguard. 1. That means a minimum of 100 Vanguard missions. With how long they can be sometimes… doesn’t that seem like a little much? Especially when you look at Symmetry Remastered and The Vow quests and realize they require 400 POINTS. Please, make these things more bearable. My vote? Remove them and make the catalysts Random Drops. At least all you’d have to do when you got one is the thing most Catalysts have to “arm” them I guess I can call that? Idk, but at least you’d only have THAT part to do instead of all of this grinding Vanguard and stuff just to get it.
TL/DR: Fix the portal, or more preferably, get rid of the catalyst quests entirely. Please. These quests are not worth any CATALYST (not even a gun, just a catalyst for one) they give, no matter how good.
