Yup. I’m becoming a Free To Play Player and I’m keeping my gear. It’s my game that I spent hundreds and hundreds on. I’m gonna play my game the way I want. Bungie will just have to handle their Share Holders themselves. Not my problem.
-
These changes will be walked back post Renegades or before. They are simply doing it to spike #s upfront for they don’t get shutdown for the lack of engagement metrics. Inb4 another “ we hear you the level grind isn’t fun and gear expiring feels bad “. Even though we have already fleshed that out for years. Typical Bungie
-
Exactly exactly exactly. Except the part about people at Bungie who "play this game." We all know no one at Bungie actually plays their own game.

Remember when Bungie made games they want to play? I can't imagine any of them play the game with how they make some of the decisions. -
Edited by longevity: 7/14/2025 9:59:07 PMRegardless of the few posters defending it or saying it's not so bad, pre-orders are down massively Apparently a ton of the playerbase cares about their previous investment and time being devalued this isn't the system the success of bungie was built on, it's something new and entirely focused on endless grinds to service the metrics of a cash shop based live service this destiny maintenance team didn't like how many players were super happy being done with the armor grind, so they are throwing basically all of the old armor in the trash with a massive power creep on new armor, they are throwing way more perks on new weapons, and they are adding a useless 5 world tiers to increase the grind from killing stuff to loot you really want motivated by more power creep on the guns on tier 5. they are outta ideas or innovation, so they just added a ton of power creep to everything and now it also restarts every 6 months not a single part of this decision was based on player value, it is just to service their metrics for cash shop buys call it sunsetting, call it whatever, but the game will now be grindier and everyone wants the best gear which will now require way more grinding and redo'ing a lot of it every six months
-
I already decided that, if I play this expansion at all, that I will only grind the armor I need for my builds to function. That's it. Weapons will be picked up if they're worth exploring, much like before, but the damage bonus and DR bonus will never factor into my decisions. I will literally ignore armor again once my stats are acquired and just "take more damage" for my mental health. I may play Destiny, but I refuse to get suckered into Bungie's excessive Skinner Box.

Edited by Ogma: Destroyer of Worlds: 7/14/2025 3:30:47 PMIt’s going to be considered among the worst things they’ve ever done. Get ready for a cycle of everyone using the same stuff over and over again with each content drop like clockwork. Want even less incentive to grind and try out every new weapon? How about it’ll be less effective in less than 6 months, as will your armor. Terrible for build crafting diversity. Whoever came up with and greenlit this idea should be fired. It’s the most uninteresting and least compelling way to go about this. It doesn’t matter how much of a difference it makes. If it matters at all, players WILL “optimize the fun out of the game” when things are objectively better no matter by how little. If it doesn’t actually matter then why bother implementing it? Anyone should be able to see right through exactly what this REALLY is about. Again, worst idea they’ve ever had. This is the biggest sign I’ve ever seen from them that suggests that they have just given up at this point.

Edited by S7arLord87: 7/17/2025 2:21:54 PMIt's amazing how they managed to make the loot chase more exciting and at the same time almost completely pointless. I used to love to turn my brain off and farm for hours cuz the gameplay is and always will be fun but after Weight Gate (which is still a thing imo) and now the New Gear Bonus k!lled it for me

Nope but I am ready for the matter baby meta

You can take a look at it... Personally, I see this new mechanic as degradation. The upcoming "Edge of Fate" items will have a maximum of 15% damage reduction and 10% weapon damage. That's an advantage. And a disadvantage for those who can't or won't use it. I doubt that it will be easy to assemble the right set. And that from now on, every six months. I can't imagine that every Destiny 2 player has the time for that. Just to be fair, there might be a workaround, but that's still suboptimal. What bothers me is that Bungie wants the expiration and the grind. Instead of creating content so good that everyone wants to play the game without end. Revenant and Heresy were moderate. And judging by that, I don't expect a change with "Edge of Fate." Bungie always makes the same. That's their formula, and people buy it, more or less. Recently less, and that for a reason. The company is ruined. It has lost its soul and heart a long time ago. Bungie really exaggerated it. And that brought them back to year one. From now on, it's the same model of content packages again. One has to realize it's about survival for them. With Marathon on hold, every other IP gone, and only Destiny 2 left. And for that, they're making it so easy for their clients... For tomorrow, lots of luck!

Look what happened to Diablo 4 when the devs force meta upon players. 🍻🫡

This is literally how every seasonal loot game works and honestly, Bungie and Destiny are late to the party. Changes in metas and build diversity are why I go back to seasonal games to begin with. I get some people are probably happy with running consecration, storms keep or devour with the same 6 weapons for the next 10 years but it’s boring.

Edited by rednayeL: 7/14/2025 3:07:41 PMI also think it is a bad idea. I’ll try the DLC, but I’m not hyped, and I’m actually afraid. More puzzles, which I hate, and new armour every season? This might be it for me.
-
Edited by The Hermit IX: 7/14/2025 8:41:55 PMWe always have new gear bonuses since WQ. It started with better gear with origin traits and the artifact. Seasonal gear getting buffs isn’t new. We also have had a power reset every time we get a new artifact. Power isn’t attached to the artifact but instead gained by playing more difficult content. It’s just labeled now. Your gear isn’t sunset either. Adepts and crafted weapons are the equivalent of tier 3 and 4 weapons. It will be just fine to do anything in the game. If you want the new gear that’s slightly better then chase new loot. That’s not a new thing either. How do players miss this?
-
Give it a try first. Honestly I felt the same couple month ago, and now with a bit of farming and prep, just using the gear I already had, which is roughly tier 3, I now have a couple build with 2 stats in the 110-150 range where I want them. Not meta, but I’m eager to try them out, and I doubt they feel useless for most content. The additional 10% dmg is just gonna give you an edge in GM maybe, but when you see how many build can give you massive buff, I doubt it’s gonna be night and day.
-
The new gear bonus is fine! It's a nice touch to add a little damage to the new weapons, or a bit damage resist to the new armour. The old gear will be just as useful if the bonuses existed or not... having the bonuses is quite literally a bonus! Consider it a free artifact perk for extra weapon damage, for example. You might be insinuating the next bit, and apologies if that's the case... but it feels like the negative aspect comes from the tier system. So if you want tier 5 gear with seasonal bonuses and set bonuses (on the armour), then that's a pretty repetitive grind season by season (or dlc by dlc).
-
Hyperbolic. I don't like the bonus either. But comparing it to sunsetting is not accurate.
-
The way this game works, the bonus you get from new weapons and armor is not going to matter for the majority of players. I'm going to grab every weapon, finish my battle pass and wait for the next season. Playing this game too much ruins my experience - now I go in, play and leave and wait for the next drop. Playing an endless grind just isn't for me anymore - especially when everything gets reset every season... For those that don't like these changes, do what I do - stop grinding...
-
While I was in wait and see mode since the last few seasons post final shape haven't done it for me, ya know same thing different coat of paint so I took a break. But the moment I saw your gear is invalidated in 3-6 months not In a here's new stuff that may be worth grabbing, but outright this WILL be objectively worse so regrind and shut up. I not only busted out laughing but that killed any potential interest in destiny as a whole.
-
Bungie liked sunsetting so much, it's the new business model.
-
Edited by Ursine: 7/14/2025 10:35:11 AMArtifact bonuses (far bigger ones at that) have been a thing for years. But pop off.
-
It breaks your heart? Really? lol Melodrama aside (JFC), some of the stuff you said is just wrong, and it's because you're overly emotional. 1. Nothing about new gear bonus is anti-collector. It as nothing to do with the acqusition of gear aside from encouraging you to get the new stuff, which a collector is going to do anyways. 2. They said in plain language that sunsetting was gone because it is, and this isn't sunsetting. A temporary buff to new gear is not sunsetting. A yellow school bus is not a green piece of paper. I don't really know how else to give this information to you. They aren't remotely the same thing. Sunsetting, actual sunsetting as it happened in the past anyways, actively devalued your gear, making it less effective (seemingly forever) than the the rest of gear. The bonus temporarily buffs your new gear. Apples and orangutans. To be clear, *I don't like the new gear bonus either*, but we don't need to make a mountain out of a molehill, and most of the people that play this game aren't doing content hard enough for an extra 15% to make or break their experience. And it sure as sht isn't sunsetting.
-
I'm sure that Bungie's justification is that the new gear will be an upgrade and will not use the word "sunset". The thing is, as many people have already pointed out, there goes YEARS of grinding for the perfect balance of armor pieces that define ones play style. The reverse is also true. A lot of people have adjusted their play style with the armor random perks that they were given. In both cases, player investment plays a big role in game updates. I have not played in a while since I couldn't find any more magic in the once addictive and engaging game that I have ever played. Then again, I also thought that after 10 or so years of playing the game and going through the same grind day after day, week after week, season after season... it's probably time to let go. What's in store in the next expansion? If it's going to be the same grind over and over again, perhaps this game needs to just end.
