Why Mandatory Discord Is Making Clans Less Welcoming

My last post is gone, weird, so here’s a new one. I get it — communication can be tricky, and not being able to easily connect with your clan can be frustrating. But making Discord mandatory to join a clan can end up excluding players who simply want to be part of a community. What should be a simple, welcoming process now feels more like a hiring resume. Long application forms Required Discord use Raid logs, class roles, and time zones Layers of rules and approval steps This isn’t about being anti-Discord — it’s about forced participation. Discord is a great tool for people who choose to use it. But when it’s made a requirement just to join a clan, that’s exclusion, not community-building. Some players deal with social anxiety. Some want to protect their privacy. Some just don’t want to juggle another platform. All of that is valid — but making Discord mandatory puts up a barrier for no good reason. And no — “you don’t have to join a clan” isn’t a real counterargument. Clans are a core part of how Destiny 2 is meant to be played. If access to that system is being bottlenecked by third-party gatekeeping, that’s a design issue Bungie needs to pay more attention to. Here’s what they could do to help: * Add better/more in-game communication tools (a chat channel system, group announcements, etc.) * Provide clearer clan discovery and matchmaking options that don’t require off-platform steps (clan filters like “Discord optional” or “no mics required”) * Set standards for clan listings that discourage excessive entry barriers To be clear: clans that offer Discord as an option — where players can choose to engage — are being inclusive and respectful. That’s totally reasonable. It’s only when it becomes a requirement that it crosses a line. And let’s be honest — we all know that the clans making Discord mandatory are usually the ones running massive clan networks with hundreds of tags under their umbrella. At that point, it’s not really about community anymore; it’s about scale. If you’re managing that many clans, you’re not trying to build a welcoming community — you’re chasing numbers. And that’s fine if that’s your goal, but don’t pretend it's about fostering connection when the systems you require actively push people away. Paragon: Think about how matchmaking works in Nightfalls or Crucible. You don’t have to fill out a form, join a server, or explain your playstyle just to run a strike. You press a button, get paired with others, and go. It’s not perfect, but it works because the barrier to entry is low and the goal is shared. Clans should aim for that same energy. When participation is based on shared interest — not strict requirements — you get more natural connection, better vibes, and a wider range of people who actually want to be there, not just those who are willing to jump through hoops. When barriers like mandatory Discord use prevent some players from joining clans, it limits the community’s potential to grow and connect. We need to work toward being more inclusive and finding more respectful ways of building a community. After all, a welcoming Destiny community — and a welcoming clan — benefits us all. I AM ABSOLUTELY NOT going to argue with anyone. I just want your thoughts. (Optional discord use is good!! If you’re arguing about that, then you didn’t understand my post and don’t need to reply)

  • Because the game itself does not offer good quality tools for communication, discord is by far a superior method for managing an active clan. -Scheduled acitivity signups alone and superior cross platform mic alone is why i would never join a clan that doesn't utilize discord or some other form of 3rd party coms tool.
