Hey there. XBox is your Primary account, it is the originator of the characters you are using. It may not be where you are actually playing the game, but every time you launch the game on Steam, etc, you are logging into and making progress on this old XBox account's data. Even if the new unlink policy had never been put in place, to abandon your current XBox account therefore means to abandon your characters; all progress, all inventory, etc. I am not 100% sure if the characters will still be available if you delete the XBox account. Maybe they still will be, like how Stadia characters remain available through cross-save. Personally I wouldn't risk it.
