What do we think of the Switch 2 so far?

After owning it for one day, here are my initial thoughts: It’s just a more powerful Switch. That’s what every new gen Xbox and PlayStation has always been, but Nintendo is always so creative with their new consoles that it is a tad disappointing that it feels so same-y. That’s being said, the Switch 1 was the culmination of decades of innovation for Nintendo, and the design they came up with was the best they had ever made. So there’s not much of a need to change what was already perfect. As it is just a more powerful Switch, Nintendo has no reason not to allow every Switch 1 game to run at 60 fps and higher resolution on the Switch 2 besides laziness and greed. I wish there were a couple more launch titles. I don’t want an unfinished game to be released too early, but having Metroid Prime 4 as a launch title would have been awesome. Right now I’m just enjoying finally finishing Tears of the Kingdom after not playing it for a couple years. It genuinely is a more fun experience being able to hold a stable 60 fps on my 1440p monitor. That and Mario Kart should keep my occupied enough until Metroid Prime 4 comes out, and then, eventually, The Duskbloods.

  • I'm going to play Metroid prime 4 on my switch one and proceed to wait to get one used because poor... and I have lost almost all faith in Nintendo...

Doesn't officially release here until July 10th but stores are adding "*pre-orders will be shipped by December 31st" so... yeah... supply line not looking good.
To be honest, it's a bit pricey for my blood. Wasn't planning to get one any time soon. Have a few friends who are bummed though.
• Bullet list because I’m willing to admit I’m lazy and don’t wanna type paragraphs: - it’s a more powerful switch. People wanted one, now we have one. I swear it’s like that once scene from SpongeBob with the pistachio ice cream with ppls reaction to that. - new joyscons are very nice, size increase is noticeable and buttons feel much better. - bought MKW but haven’t had time to get around to it cuz summer semester got me all over the place with the credits im taking - playing pokemon scarlet and very much notice the improvements with frame rate and textures. Pop in is still notice but nowhere near as bad as playing on NS1. - MP4B is gonna be the big showstopper for the Joycons having mice functionality; I think it’s gonna be the best looking game on the console till the next mainline Zelda or 3D Mario. - duskbloods and kirby air riders are the more recent games I’m wanting to play. I still think it’s crazy if we got a FS exclusive (that’s more or less a BB spiritual sucessor) AND Sakurai’s return to Kirby in the same direct - game key cards at this point I’m kinda indifferent about. Yes Nintendo should offer more storage sizes instead of 2gb and 64gb cards but I get the logistics behind it with economies of scale. At the same time, a lot of games require a day 1 download to just play, let alone how much data is stored on the disk vs on console storage. Not to mention the amount of storage DLC for games is gonna take. - game pricing is an issue. They really need to lower the prices of lower first party games if they want people to play the upgraded experience on NS2. For the price they’re offering for the upgrade, I think it’s fine. Base game price needs to go lower. - Also Nintendo really dropped the ball with relaying information post direct. Little to no excuses there. TLDR:
It’s fine. Console is gonna have a better reception as time goes on, especially with the next generation I’m guessing when the next PS and Xbox are gonna be mad high. If the biggest issue come down to money, there are far worse problems the console could be having (inb4 entire WiiU life and 3DS launch)
• The biggest surprise to me is that it's possible to get them, even a few days after launch. They must have really put units in stores or it's not as popular as they thought. Hell, I had a hard time finding a store with an Xbox X two months ago.

    • WHAT? The switch (2) already came out? I need to keep better track of these things. Well now that I know this I’m going to give my preliminary assessment which is; just another console. Nintendo’s great and all but It’s just another generation, reusing old games but saying the remastered version is « better » oh well. I will not get it but I’ll keep my ears open to any conversation about it. (Also it costs way to much for the changes.)

        • Yeah I mean its fine, I do like the slightly bigger joycons. I do plan on going back and finishing BoTW and ToTK. I personally don't see myself ever using the joycon as a mouse though.

The good: -The new Joycons are very nice. They snap in and out of the Switch so easily, and it is so nice. They're also a bit bigger, which is also a plus. I really love the new Joycon covers, too--those bits that go on the end. -That new stand, brilliant. It's a lot more stable than the old Switch stand, and works on a lot more versatile of environments. No longer do I need to make sure to position it just right on uneven terrain, it just works! -The menu might seem almost exactly the same, and it is, but there are a lot of small tweaks that I really enjoy. It's just a lot of small stuff. -It has almost 100% backwards compatibility, which is important to me. Every single one of my Switch games was downloaded no problem. Very nice. And, on a related note, not only are games backwards compatible, but controllers, too! So, if you do prefer the old Joycons, they're still usable, and same goes for any pro controllers you might have! -The transfer was quick and easy. Obviously downloading games will take a hot minute, but otherwise, I had no troubles. -Mouse mode is neat. I doubt it, but I hope it's compatible with TWEWY. Would be neat to try. Atm, it seems like just a gimmick, since I don't have any games that work with it, but that might change eventually. I doubt I'll use it extensively, but I like that it's there. The bad: -Needing a new SD card was a bummer. I get newer, bigger, faster games need newer, bigger, faster hardware, but I feel a compromise would've been great. Like what Xbox did. You still need a new external hard drive for Series X games, but you can use an old hard drive for Xbox One games. -As you said, the launch lineup was a little lacking. Admittedly, this was mostly just a bummer because of a misconception on my part. I would've been okay with Mario Kart and Forgotten Land DLC, but apparently the Forgotten Land DLC doesn't release until August. -I heard the battery life is shorter, which makes sense. I haven't had enough experience to know how bit a deal this is, but my Switch has run out of battery at work before, so this will probably suck a little. Mario Kart, the good: -I love the new outfits. I've only seen Rosalina's, but they're all very nice. It'll add some good variety when playing online. -Going around the open world is surprisingly relaxing. I was expecting to really dislike free roam, and while it's not as fun as racing, it's more enjoyable than I thought. -The tracks themselves are very nice, both the new and the old. They look great, and they're fun to race on. I like the new rail grinding thing, though admittedly I haven't done a lot of wall riding. -I like that you just choose your bike/kart now, and get going. No more of that choose individual parts nonsense. -The elimination mode is fun. It's a bit one-sided, where once you get a lead it's harder to lose it than regular races, but still, I like it. -Might be my favorite Rainbow Road. Mario Kart, the bad: -I'm not sure how I feel about the new Grand Prix format. I feel like I'm not as familiar with the tracks as I am in older Mario Karts. Still, it's a lot more noticeable when you get onto a track than I was initially thinking, which is nice. -The game feel is a little... Off. I feel like drifting has a much large effect than in MK8DX, and I don't feel like I have as much control over my bike while I'm drifting. Braking, in particular, kinda feels like it has no effect. To some extent, this may be due to stat differences. Obviously I don't have my exact same bike from 8DX. -Getting 3 Stars in the elimination mode is a little harsh. You need to get first on every gate it looks like. Since this thing is like one big long race, it's basically asking you to play perfectly for the whole race, which is a bit much. Possible, but very annoying. -No 200cc as far as I can tell (though it could just be unlockable). I don't see myself playing this more than 8DX unless that gets added. 200cc is the main mode I play. -While I love the outfits themselves, I don't like how unevenly spread they are. Peach and Mario have about 10 each, Rosalina and Baby Rosalina only have 5, and Pauline only has 2. I understand the enemy characters, like Goombas and Chargin' Chucks, not getting any outfits, but I wish the characters who did get outfits had a more even spread. I would've preferred they choose a set amount of themes, and then design an outfit for each character fitting that theme. So, you could have: Standard, Casual, Pro Racer, Snow Gear, Beach Outfit, Aero, etc. -They still don't let you use Auto-Accelerate in Time Trials, which is ridiculous. Auto-Accelerate doesn't even give you an edge, it just makes it so you don't have to hold down a button. This was a thing in 8DX, too, so it's not a new complaint, but it was something I was hoping they'd change. Mario Kart, the iffy: -The way you unlock outfits is also a little bit of a bummer as well. As far as I can tell, what outfit you get is just random. From the Direct, I was going to be under the impression it was determined by zone. So, like, you'd get the snow gear if you picked up food in a snowy zone, for instance. But on the flip side, it did make it easy to hop into free roam, unlock all of Rosalina's outfits, then hop back into Grand Prix. So, I guess I can't complain too much? Overall, though, I like it. Good console. Can't wait for Kirby Air Riders.

The exclusives don't matter to me so much, so depending on budget I'd probably still consider a steam deck to replace ye olde PSP.
