Right. Look. We understand. You had an expansion to sell. You had a shiny new subclass to push. Gotta keep the lights on at Bungie HQ and all that. Respect the hustle.
But what an absolute circus it created.
Not only did you nuke Prismatic abilities from orbit after they’d already upended the sandbox, but you managed to drag the rest of the game into a state that feels less like Destiny PvP and more like Day One Mayhem with a side of ADHD. Casual Control has become a parody of itself. Blink and you’re dead. Stand still and you’re dead. Move and—well—you’re dead.
And as a bonus prize? You handed out Reddrix 2.0, the “low risk, high reward, please just keep playing until Marathon is ready” participation gun. Beautiful.
We get it. You're willing to light the "delicate ecosystem" on fire if it means selling a few more emotes and expansions. But honestly, lads — enough's enough.
Here's a radical idea:
Put the brakes on the chaos. Bring back Checkmate.
The best thing you've done for PvP since the “go fast” update — and that was years ago. Yes, of course, you couldn’t resist softening it up a bit after the Casual Union of Dad Gamers staged their usual protest about having to actually use their guns. But even that Checkmate was miles better than the nonsense we’re stuck with now.
And before anyone wheels out the old "Destiny isn’t competitive!" or "But muh space magic!" arguments — save it. This was never about being an esport. It’s about balance. About creating a sandbox where engagement lasts longer than a dopamine hit and a shader unlock.
Where people actually invest time to improve. Imagine that.
You’ve even turned Trials into a participation trophy parade. Congratulations. It took exactly two weekends for the mode to deflate. Someone really ought to remind you that Trials was never about the loot. It was about the achievement. The Lighthouse wasn’t the prize — getting there was. Without the struggle, it’s just another skybox with a slot machine. Oh, and thanks to all the streamers for promoting Bungies move. Got to pay for the villa in France, right?
So. Back to the point.
Flip the switch. Bring back Checkmate.
Let the mode breathe. Let people evolve. Give the sandbox a moment to recover from the magic spam hangover.
While you're at it:
Disable Radiant Dance Machines (seriously, what were you thinking?).
Slow down fusion rifle charge times.
Add actual recoil to pulse rifles (gasp!).
Maybe — just maybe — make killing someone require a tiny hint of skill.
Sidenote for the PvE Tourist Brigade:
Before the usual suspects arrive — yes, we know you hate PvP. Yes, we know it makes you uncomfortable when the boss fight shoots back properly. No one is stopping you from farming your seasonal slog and choreographed mechanics. But we don’t come into your DPS-check echo chambers demanding change, so kindly stay out of PvP threads with your “BuT iT’s A pOwEr FaNtAsY” speeches.
And while we’re at it — please, spare us the “It’s just a game, don’t take it so seriously” routine. You say that, right before you slap on every meta build, every cheese loadout, every low-effort, high-reward crutch you can find — just so you can “succeed” in the very game you apparently don’t care about. Right? Makes perfect sense.
Your frustration with PvP is not our problem. It's just that without your god-rolled crutches, you're cannon fodder — and deep down, you know it.
Thanks for your service. Goodbye.

Bungie said PvP won’t differ too much from pve and yet you PvP mains keep expecting it to, what a bunch of silly ducks. You set yourself up for the frustration by wanting it to be something the developers have said it won’t be. So don’t blame the pve mains who tell you what Bungie has already said and shown: it’s a space magic game. And they treat PvP like a secondary concern. Take the hint, adjust expectations and enjoy it. If you can’t, you’re the problem.

Beautifully said.

Checkmate everything.
Disable Radiant Dance Machines (seriously, what were you thinking?).
I wasn't winning using them so idc
Slow down fusion rifle charge times.
Doubt bungie can do that without it affecting pve. Would you like a shotty meta instead?
But we don’t come into your DPS-check echo chambers demanding change, so kindly stay out of PvP threads with your “BuT iT’s A pOwEr FaNtAsY” speeches.
You (pvpers) demanded the nerf to the hunter strand decoy. That change echoed into the DPS-check echo chambers, now it's basically useless. You don't have to enter a thread to have an effect on others so get off your high horse. From the looks of it you want Destiny pvp to be less about the space magic and more about the guns. Go play CoD or something.

Loved Checkmate too. But the only reason why they removed the meter was because it promoted snowballing on mass. The better players will get buckets of free special ammo by just playing normally while the fodder will have nothing to contest against the enemy team’s onslaught except for their “weak” primaries. Until Bungie finds a good solution, we’re just stuck with the stupid crate system forever.
-
Agreed what happened to the spec ammo meter they just ditched it and made fusions insane and more abilities thrown everywhere
-
God, I hated checkmate. And I intensely resent how they made all pvp similar to checkmate. This also marks the era of unpopular pvp.

Edited by Nimune: 4/25/2025 7:18:50 PMMaking pvp slower does not make it better. Some people prefer fast gameplay and plentiful abilities. Trying to turn this into any other slow generic shooter is not the way. Making PVP fast ticks off the bad players, making PvP slow ticks off the good players No one’s gonna win with absolutes, checkmate in my opinion is a snoozefest

Edited by Oogyman: 4/25/2025 9:04:48 PMSo I use nothing but weapons. Rarely do I even use a super, unless its absolutely needed. I'm more casual now, due to having a family and well, its spring, I've got amazing biking trails to hit up. Also you don't understand what a participation trophy is so let me correct you. A participation trophy is given, just for being involved. We don't get to the Lighthouse by just being in game. That is only achieved by winning 7 matches. It has to be earned. It takes a lot of work to achieve those wins, because its nothing but the sweatiest of sweats. Don't bother arguing it because I am absolutely correct beyond any doubt. By the way, I'm not trying to invalidate you. The rest is opinion, which I do respect, and I do see validity there.

Normal 6v6 is a mini mayhem mode with all the ability spam.

It’s always the people abusing the meta from one season to the next, crutching anything and everything possible, saying “keep crying/relax, it’s just a game.” God I cannot stand that.

Probably the most eloquent rebuttal to the horrors this season created that I’ve read. I’m a hunter main who’s played PvP for 10 years. Smoke, invis, RDM, Redrix Estoc, and OTP killed the game. Bolt charge sucks across the board. We need to rely on other things like skill and teamwork. But Bungie did this because they need players. Maybe they should have bought better employees than cars.

Edited by FatzDomingo: 4/25/2025 9:37:40 PMPeople like you should have a separate game from PvE. Your own guns, your own armour and never be able to use them in PvE. In return PvE gets the game it wants and PvP whining NEVER gets to nerf our abilities or our weapons.

What a wonderful post MoNki !!! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this, and agree with most of your comments. I'll have to check up on the Checkmate mode as I have never tried it, but I concur with the majority of your thread 👍

Respect the passion. About Trials, it’s still not a participation trophy. In took two weekends for those rejoicing players to learn this. Unfortunately, these players also don’t care about improving and only want make-believe matchmaking. Still, the biggest issue is that the game is old. They can’t innovate while carrying Xbox One and PS4 players.

You said it better than anyone has. Thanks.

👏🤩👏
I think... yes.. I think I love you. > in a manly way 🤝🫸🫷💪 🤜🤛
-
I was in a huge state of denial for years. I loved Bungie - have been playing their games since launch of Halo CE. Sadly, their new team is just not great. They don’t know how to balance a sandbox and seem to make the wrong decisions at every turn. Maybe one day we will return to an age where people are hired on merit…
-
I don't know why all the drama. Just say you want checkmate back. A lot of people want it.

Also lower the aim assist on several weapons and perks
