Proposal: Perk Collection System to Enhance Weapon Customization & Reduce Vault Clutter

Summary: (TL/DR) Introduce a "Perk Collection System" allowing players to collect and store perks from multiple drops of the same weapon, enabling flexible perk swapping without needing multiple weapon copies. This system would reduce vault space consumption, streamline the perk grinding process, and enhance weapon customization. Background & Problem: In Destiny 2, acquiring the perfect weapon roll often involves grinding PvE and PvP activities, dismantling weapons, and repeatedly hunting for specific perks. This process is time-consuming, RNG-dependent, and results in an ever-growing vault filled with duplicate weapons with different perks. Current issues: Excessive vault clutter due to multiple duplicates Frustration from RNG and repetitive farming Limited flexibility in perk customization after acquisition Proposed Solution: Perk Collection & Swap System 1. Weapon Discovery & Perk Unlock: When a player first finds a weapon (e.g., Palindrome), they unlock its base perks (traits, barrels, magazines, etc.). These perks are associated with that specific weapon. 2. Perk Collection & Extraction: Instead of dismantling each weapon to get perks, players can "extract" or "collect" perks from multiple drops of the same weapon. For example, if you get a Palindrome with "Fluted Barrel," "Accurized Rounds," “To the Pain," and "Snapshot Sights," you can save these perks into a personal "perk library" for that weapon. 3. Perk Library & Swapping: All collected perks for a specific weapon are stored in a dedicated menu. Players can then freely swap perks on their weapon within this library, customizing it for different activities without needing multiple copies. 4. Storage & Collection Benefits: Reduced Vault Space: Only one weapon instance is needed. Perks are stored separately, freeing vault space. Flexible Customization: Swap perks at will, tailoring weapons to activity-specific needs. Progress & Collection Tracking: Perk progress and collections are saved, providing a sense of achievement and progression. Advantages: -Less Vault Clutter: One weapon, multiple perk options stored and swapped easily. More Engaging Grind:** Collect perks over time from multiple drops, making the hunt more rewarding. -Increased Player Agency: Customize weapons without the RNG frustration of rolling the "perfect" perk set in one drop. -Encourages Continued Play: Players have ongoing motivation to farm for perks, similar to shaders or catalysts. Implementation Considerations: Perk Extraction Mechanics: Could be implemented via a token system or perk "capture" mechanic, perhaps requiring a small in-game resource or token earned through gameplay. Perk Rarity & Locking: Some perks could be rarer or require specific activities to unlock, adding a layer of depth. Swap Limitations: To balance gameplay, consider limiting how often perks can be swapped or introducing a cooldown. Compatibility with Existing Systems: Integrate seamlessly with weapon pattern unlocking, crafting, and collections. UI/UX Design Suggestions: Perk Collection Menu: -A dedicated interface in the weapon customization menu where players see their collected perks for each weapon. -Display perks with rarity indicators. -Show progress towards unlocking rare perks. -Allow players to select and swap perks instantly. Perk "Capture" Button: When obtaining a weapon with new perks, a prompt or button appears to "Save" or "Capture" the perk into the collection. Perk Swap Interface: A simple drag-and-drop or toggle system for swapping perks on the weapon. Include visual cues for perk rarity and unlocked status. Perk Rarity & Progress Indicators: Visual progress bars or icons showing how many perks have been collected and their rarity. Gameplay Impact: Enhanced Customization Flexibility: Players can adapt their weapons for different activities quickly, fostering experimentation. Vault Space Optimization: Significantly reduce the number of duplicate weapons stored, freeing space for other gear. More Rewarding Farming: Collecting perks from multiple drops creates a sense of progression and achievement, similar to completing triumphs or unlocking catalysts. Reduced RNG Frustration: Instead of relying solely on RNG to roll the perfect perks in one drop, players can gradually build their ideal perk set over time. Conclusion: This Perk Collection System would make weapon customization more flexible, reduce vault clutter, and turn the grind into a more rewarding and strategic experience. It aligns with Destiny 2’s focus on personalization and player agency—giving players more control over their weapons and their gameplay.
