Is all the marathon hate warranted?

Is the hate warranted? Is everyone just jumping on the bandwagon? What would make it better? What does the gaming industry need? To make gaming great again? No live service? No microtransactions? Full campaign? What will it take....

  • Original ideas? There's nothing about Marathon that peaks any interest. It looks like a generic fps in a dying genre. I think the reason that Marathon is getting a lot of negative attention is propelled by the Destiny Community wondering "is this really what you've been doing this whole time?"

  • I think that it's because they're using the money we paid for Destiny and, instead of fixing the problems with D2, are instead using that money on Marathon. I don't enjoy PvP so I'm not happy about this use of my money. Also I played the original Marathon trilogy and had hoped that this would be a modern reboot of that classic and not Crucible 24/7.

If you simply ask some of the people making hate posts about it what they don't like, they either say nothing or they just use the same cookie cutter response that the other posts have. The main thing I can think of that the gaming industry needs is less people thinking that every game ever made needs to cater or pander to them specifically just to be good. A lot of people don't seem to understand that games aren't being made just for them, and not everyone wants what they want.

      • Marathon saving grace is it has Bungies name behind it. Whether that's enough, time will tell.

      • It deserves to be hated

      • No idea, I rarely buy games, but if it looks fun I might play it a little. Its just another game as any other game, to me anyway.

It would be cooler if you had classes rather than heroes.

The maps look too small (scale wise) for the type of game it is. I haven't seen anyone going prone which limits certain play styles (sniping from a vantage point). It also seems certain weapons are better used against players than NPCs which could create metas as the range of engagement tends to be closer distances. Other notable factors is that I didn't see damage numbers when players were doing damage which is important for players to know what guns are better options. Marathon looked as though it is a watered down version of a Battle Royale (in some areas and a extraction shooter on others) without the choice of where you spawn. I haven't seen what happens when the match timer runs out or if it's just better to bring minimalist gear and forgo trying to bring you best items.

          • Bungie has been its player base adversary for years. They're not creative enough anymore to justify the allegiance or price tag. Cold fish sandwich.

          • It's a simple equation for me: if I don't find a game interesting, I don't play it or really even talk about it. However, it seems that I may be something of an anomaly since many disinterested in 'Marathon' can't seem to shut up about it. Nothing is wrong with gaming so there's nothing to fix; the problem lies with the players.

            • Bungie should have played it safe and went with an fps single-player game instead of a niche extraction shooter.
