Reworking unloved Legendary Traits to be brought in line with the current sandbox.
I recently made a post on my subreddit r/Destiny2Suggestions, where myself and a few friends put together a few suggested reworks for old or underutilized legendary weapon traits to try to make them viable in the current sandbox. I figured the next logical step was to bring them to the feedback forum! We came up with 7 proposed reworks (because we like that number) for several old or underwhelming legendary weapon traits, tried to keep them balanced and especially tried to maintain the spirit of each of the traits while making them as viable as possible in today's Destiny sandbox. I'll just go ahead and quote my post here:
Suggestions
I'll suggest some perks here and how they could be reworked to fit into the current sandbox, and how they could be changed while maintaining their spirit. We've seen this with the likes of High Ground, Reversal of Fortune, Kill Clip, Destabilizing Rounds and quite a few others. Our suggestions are:
1. Shattering Blade
If your heavy attack consumes the last of your ammo, it deals significantly increased damage. Excludes aerial attacks.
We've come up with a potential rework:
Heavy attack while blocking to consume all remaining ammo and unleash a devastating blow, proportionate to the ammo consumed. Could have a new attack animation similar to Crown-Splitter.
2. Adaptive Munitions
This weapon adapts its damage output and effectiveness against energy shields that don't match the weapon's damage type.
Here's our suggestion:
Dealing sustained damage to an elemental shield, not matching the weapon, changes the weapon's element to match the shield until stowed. Non-elemental shields instead grant a short period of increased weapon damage.
While more situational, we believe that this would increase usage rate for content like lost sectors and grandmaster nightfalls, as well as make the perk viable on special and heavy weapons.
3. Demoralize
Precision final blows cause nearby targets to become weakened.
Our only suggestion is to change the requirement to any final blow, rather than precision final blows. This should bring the perk in line with the likes of the incredibly powerful Destabilizing Rounds, which currently dominates the void sandbox.
4. En Garde
Quick attacks immediately after swapping to this Sword do additional damage for an improved duration.
We feel that the 20% damage increase for 4 seconds is completely underwhelming in the current sandbox, so we've come up with a possible solution that puts in on par with the likes of Bait and Switch:
Final blows immediately after swapping to this Sword (Within 4s) grant a period of increased damage(50% for 8s).
5. Invisible Hand
Repeatedly missing targets increases this weapon's stability for a short time. This buff lasts for a short duration after a target is hit.
We feel that weapon traits that incentivize missing shots don't sit right with most players looking for strong weapons to chase, but in order to preserve the nature of the perk, we've made a small change to the meta game of this trait:
Non-precision hits increases this weapon's stability for a short time. This buff lasts for a short duration after a precision hit.
6. Mulligan
Missing a shot has an improved chance to return ammo directly to the magazine.
Mulligan is an informal golf slang term where a golfer gets to retake a shot after a poor play, and not have it count against them. It took us a bit of discussion but we've arrived at a possible rework that could make the perk quite useful on weapons like fusion rifles and shotguns, and the machine guns they appear so frequently on, while maintaining the essence of the original perk:
Rapidly landing non-precision hits will return one round to the magazine.
7. Cluster Bomb
Rockets spawn cluster bombs upon detonation.
This trait used to be the king of Rocket Launcher damage, but in recent years it's fallen far behind. We feel that its usefulness is more focused, however, on clearing rooms of enemies rather than focusing on a single target. That said, we figured it would be neat to lean into that a bit more with our suggested rework:
Damage to Bosses and Mini-bosses decreased. Rockets spawn cluster bombs upon detonation. Cluster bomb blast radius and count is increased while surrounded by combatants.
Final Comments
While these definitely aren't all "the norm" of destiny weapon traits, we really did feel that these reworks could seriously freshen up both old and new loot, giving some new options to throw into those "new weapon" perk pools and giving some pretty good reasons to chase legacy gear for the novelty of it (especially those sword traits).
