Show them what perks work in PVP and what does not. Teach them pairing a hand cannon and auto rifle might not be the best idea. Teach them pairing a pulse and a scout might not be a good idea.

If you look at the loadouts of half of the players in matchmaking for pve, the also are not setup well. Often using exotics on the wrong element sub, or weapons which don't work with their build. A lot of players just put random gear on, and send it without looking any further into it. Whenever I play activities with friends, I take a quick look at their builds/mods and point out places that could be improved. One friend still thinks kinetic mods cover all top slot weapons, so when he uses a stasis pulse, I remind him that is stasis. When I spend time on a build, I sort armor for it on DIM loadout optimizer, and save it. If I'm playing pvp for a while, I pull a variety of weapons with the same element to have options without changing mods. I also have a loadout with the same armor and different element mods in case I need to change weapons to a different element without not swap kicking in. Some players don't put effort into pvp, and play with bad loadouts, then wonder why the aren't doing well. Then pull out the toaster because they think that trading is better than losing. More often than not, it's not the weapon choice which is causing them to lose, it's game sense and loadout synergy. Good players have put in the time, use pvp focused mods (weapon targeting, handling/reload, unflinching, etc). This are difference makers when dueling against someone not using them.
