Less Puzzle More Fight

I can’t be the only one that feels like Destiny will make us play a 15 minute mission in which we’re doing nothing but sprinting the whole level killing a few enemies only to get to a boss that we just bulldoze right over. it takes longer to complete the puzzles and navigate your way than it does to beat the actual boss. The hardest part about the mission is figuring out the correct path to follow. I would much rather play a level that is easy to navigate to the final boss and then spend 10 to 15 minutes, fighting a worthy adversary, a challenging boss.

      • One of the many things that ruined final shape was the constant puzzles that stopped any momentum gained by the story. Luckily I'm fairly certain that the upcoming dlcs will be s soft reboot focused on bringing in new players. Just look at trials and the new 9 dungeon event. Both have been geared towards bringing in new or low skilled players.

        • It wouldn't be "as bad" if the mechanic/puzzle gimmicks didn't go on for a bit too long. They've always overstayed their welcome and would make failing an encounter even more of a chore, especially if you were close to the end. That said, I don't want to spend 10-15 minutes dumping bullets into a bullet sponge either, so I can't really sign off on your post.

        • Destiny is at its best when it combines Gun Play and mechanics in equal parts. If you are having to juggle both of them at a given time, you will never become bored from the lack of difficulty of enemies, yet will never feel like the pacing of the game is worse off for focusing on a mechanic. An important part of this though, is allowing you to be able to complete an encounter faster by being smarter and better. Look at Caretaker and Rhulk. Both are prime examples. Caretaker can be done super quickly thanks to being a good player, as if everyone does their job and does their job well, they are going to complete the encounter with the snap of their finger. Rhulk though, rewards the players for being smart (finding a secret or favorable interaction that expedites the encounter, like Double Dunk). Of course, both encounters have their issues. Add Clear and Addclear only isn’t fun, so maybe giving Add Clear a secondary job would’ve been fair, and Rhulk always feels lacking in Add Density, and after a certain point, you can’t expedite the encounter any further, assuming you are running particularly well. But these issues are minor in the grand scheme of things. If you can’t tell, Vow of the Disciple is still my favorite raid of all time.

        • What a lot of people are missing is that a better way of making the gameplay challenging, is to make the enemy themselves challenging. Take a look at monster Hunter, which does have mechanics you have to keep in mind, but they all come from the monster you’re fighting. This is one of the reasons why I find tormentors one of the more unique and entertaining enemies introduced in the game. It has weak spots, and when you activate them, it changes their behavior. Destiny needs enemies and bosses who’s combat mechanics are fun to face Relying on a puzzle being the primary obstacle takes away from the combat. But this is why Raids fill with ads that impede solving the puzzle, it gives you something to shoot

          • The problem I have with Destiny is that it falls flat when the solution to the issue isn't just shooting something. When I have to stop and interact with crap to start a damage phase is when the game goes from fun to a boring slog. No other good shooter makes you stop to do some crap like Destiny and for good reason it completely kills the pacing. Sundered Doctrine is by far probably the worst designed dungeon in the game. Lens holders are annoying to interact with (why they aren't just shoot to rotate baffles me). Second encounter completely lying to you with damage numbers with precision hits "working" but they don't actually do precision damage. Final encounter is the jankiest thing with Threadlings lagging and flying across the sky(almost like they aren't designed to be hostile in PvE environments) then the Boss arbritrarily deciding where he stands during damage he could be right in front of you or at the back of the room who knows where he will go? Someone made a good point about the mechanics where it just becomes very boring on repeat clears of an activity like a dungeon or raid because it plays out the same way every phase, and the only raid that even mildly changes it up is King's Fall spawning taken enemies after half health on some bosses.

          • Very well said. I can’t tell you how much I’m sick of all the stupid puzzles. I actually haven’t been playing lately. I haven’t been able to find a group to get the new exotic every time I login. I don’t blame them because of all the stupid puzzles.

            • I tought bungie learned hard lesson with making bastion and le monarque exotic missions. Full of puzzels secrets and other craps that coumunity highly raged about. However someone in the devs still force making missions heavily platform puzzle and pacour type. I hate mechanics also...

That's what i've been saying but I'm usually greeted by "but that's what makes destiny 2 stand out". Have those people looked at the population numbers??? It's clearly not working. Have they looked at the light levels of the "content creators" who claim that we want that crap? Those people are playing way less than the rest of us, always have a stacked group of followers to play with, benefit from being positive toward Bungie and foremost from being able to create guides - guides on stuff that shouldnt have been needed in the first place. And how many players are actually going in "blind"? I'm willing to bet that most people just grab a guide anyway. Hell, even if you do go in blind the first time it's just going to be tedious repetition the second time and forward. The way-over-the-top-puzzles only have value the first time. It's like Bungie is making stuff for contest mode and totally disregard how it's going to be fun to play every week. Lastly, even if I were to like all the puzzles I'd still probably dislike all the phases. It's never that we have to do something one time during a fight. NO, we have to repeat the same thing 3-4 times and that's the biggest killer here. It's incredibly boring.

                              • I wish Bungie was better at quest design, a lot of the time the missions/quests follow similar formats and require doing the same activity multiple times. Granted with the way the game is set-up puzzles are one of the few variations they can do to vary up the content. I would hazard a guess that the high Bungie creative leads don't like input from those on their team. However, I could be wrong and they're actually very collaborative.

                              • While I agree the bosses can be too easy sometimes (season of the plunder..) why on earth would you want to make bosses harder and take away puzzles? I bet you hate dungeon encounters that don’t have a boss too 😆

                                  • Standing on a plate very hard. Much stress. Zelda puzzles from 30 years ago soopr hard, brain too smooth. I hope they expand and make puzzles even harder, especially in raids. Rocket science must be used in the future hopefully, because mechanics and puzzles is what destiny has always done best. boo womp.
