I love this veiled bigotry stuff. FYI the reason companies are adding LGBTQ characters is to send a message that the prevailing homophobic rhetoric coming from the misogynist realm of gaming forums is not a reflection of the developers themselves. It's a message to this community and those that embrace them that bigots have no place in this or any other gaming community.
Your criticism that this is her only character trait is ridiculous. While not a very well developed character, she is clearly impassioned, reckless, has problems with authority and a yearning to make a connection with her and her family's past.
They didn't make her gay for no reason. They made her gay to send a message about inclusivity. If you don't like it play something else.

Umm.. no. More people being straight than gay means that being gay is uncommon. There is a huge difference between saying something is not common and not normal. One is based on statistics, the other is based on moral judgement. You are saying you don't condone who they are. If you can't see how that is an attack and offensive to someone, then you're beyond hope. It's like going up to a little person and saying, "You're not normal, and I don't condone your short lifestyle. That's not an attack on you or anything."
-
"The issue is forcing things that don't need to be forced." You mean like having two women make out in a comic book? I wonder what you think and feel when two gay men kiss right in front of you. Do you feel like their "gayness" is being forced upon you, upon your children? What you feel as you read this is telling. If you feel one thing and then write another response, that's a lie. I wonder what your "reasons why [you] think and believe" tell you then.

I love this stuff! Every single point you made is spot on, in my opion. No one gives a shit what she is... it's the point that it's 99% of the story. When was the last story in Destiny about how straight a character was / is? Holy skitter buckets Blankman, the rainbow warriors would unleash a vocal minority Bungie hasn't heard since the Vex Mythoclast and Thorn metas. Step away from your identity for a moment and work on being PEOPLE first. All my love and giggle queefs.
But I don't care that you're gay. And neither do most of the people that play this game or people around you.
If this were actually true, this thread would have died down a long time ago.
But when that is the main sticking point, that's a problem.
IT WAS NEVER THE MAIN STICKING POINT! The comic made reference to it with very little detail. It was never the focal point of her story, but just a way for you to get to know her as a person and, hopefully, draw you further into her story. It was NEVER the main point... unless you're offended by it. Then, somehow, it's the only thing you remember from the comics.

It's funny that the person you're arguing with is mentioning labels, but the first thing in their post is "left wing"...putting a label on who they think is perpetuating it...haha.
-
Exactly! They try to throw blame and point fingers but, in doing so, they end up doing EXACTLY the same thing that they're accusing the other party of doing. It's easy to see fault in other people while ignoring it in yourself.
-
No, the entire comic was basically about her sexuality. It's boring and literally no one cares.
-
It's boring and literally no one cares.
and yet, here you are...
-
Yes telling people I don’t care about someone’s sexuality. Is that shocking? I’m straight, isn’t that cool? Who cares about my past achievements and other stuff, I’m straight and that defines me as a person.
-
Excellent post.

If you make a character a certain way just for the sake of inclusivity, it doesn't add anything to the story. That's just lazy writing.
-
Inclusivity for the sake of inclusivity is the problem. You are the type of guardian that would expect a raid team to take (and by take i mean carry) you through a raid even though you dont meet the requirements to efficiently complete it just because you bought the game.
-
Mix in a string of confirmation bias, a touch of persecution complex, and some self righteousness. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you: Andeluthien!

That's actually the problem. This is the problem with Star Wars and all this shit about forcing us to confront our "bigotry". The problem is that we aren't bigots in the first place. I would have LOVED, absolutely loved it if Ana Bray was developed as a fully fledged character in the campaign of Warmind. (Actually, that applies to every character and every campaign.) I do not object to her being a woman, or that she chooses a woman as a lover. That's cool. That's who she is. Awesome. The problem is that I have no fxcking clue who she is otherwise. It's hidden in the lore somewhere that she was a badass gunslinger at one time and that she did all these... these... things... Oh! Right! That's where I draw a fxcking blank because her story, her struggles, her achievements, her choices (good or bad), are not in the fxcking story. I have no idea who she is as a person, as a guardian. I guess I could ask My Name is Byf, because he's the only one that even gives a shit to actually tell these stories unlike Bungie. But it ain't in the game. Maybe instead of "sending messages" about inclusiveness or diversity or whatever, they could give her a narrative that actually tells the bigger story of Destiny, something this game sorely needs. It could include romance. With a female. With a male. With a robot... we don't give a fxck. But slapping together a comic that's basically just another forced message we didn't need in the first place? I mean the whole point is to see her as a relatable character with struggles and dreams and hopes and badassery, as an individual. Not to just see her as a pawn, a character stuffed in a categorized box that says "I'm gay and that's all you need to know about me." That's even more bigoted. Aloy from Horizon Zero Dawn could turn out to be gay at some point, and I would not bat an eye. Do you know why? Because she is an awesome character. I got to see her grow, I got to experience fighting fxcking Thunderjaws with her. I got to see her power through a world too scared of their own fears and discover who she truly is and how that fits into the story of HZD. Didn't care she had a vagina. Didn't care if she was white or black or gay or ginger or what the fxck ever. I cared about her story because I got to bond with her as a human being in that game. I related to her struggles, worried for her, cheered for her, because they told an awesome story and developed her character. And it wasn't a story about "Look how awesome I am for having ovaries" or "better get ready to accept me you bigot gamers." They gave us reasons to want to pick the controller up and play as Aloy every day. What does Ana Bray do? She drones about "I've got to uncover my family's past" even though we don't ever even see that past or her family's secrets. We see basically nothing about her in the game. We read something here or there. But if she died in the tomorrow I couldn't care less. Because she is a stranger. And all I know about her is she had a girlfriend. Wow. That's great Ana. I had a dog that died one time, that was sad too. She's a stranger, a cardboard cutout I don't even know. Never seen her fight. Never seen her make a tough choice. Never seen her fight along side me on the ice caps of Mars. I've seen her type, I've heard her say, "Trust Rasputin" though no one really knows why we should, and I've seen her give me the same shitty cloak 4 times in a row. How bout have her be more than just her sexuality. Have her be more than just a political talking piece. Have her be a great character we can relate to.
-
It's hidden in the lore somewhere
So is the fact that she's gay... you literally have to go out of your way to read the comic that makes any mention of her love life. It's just as obscure as the rest of her story, inside of the gameplay, so try again.
-
We went out of our way to read to the comic because they don't include story stuff like this in the game. If you want to make sense of the story or even get any story, you have to look elsewhere. And when you do, you just find a poorly written romance that reveals nothing about the Brays or the Warminds.
-
So then, what's your problem?
-
Oh, we starting over? That it? That instead of showing us a story about Ana and her family and the Warmind and to how all of that relates to the darkness, we just got to see a poorly told romance just to send us the "gay is okay" message, when we didn't need that reminder in the first place.
-
How can you be so sure that this was all just to send a message that gay is ok? Maybe it was just a poorly written comic. Regardless of Bungie’s “agenda”, simply assuming that this was some kind of way for Bungie to “force” diversity is where the problem begins. Why can’t you just take it at face value and walk away? Why does it have to be a thing at all? Why... because it makes these people uncomfortable so they have to make themselves feel better by posting stuff online about how this is all some political agenda. They’re not complaining that this is bad writing. Try again...
-
No one that wanted to read the comic cares if she was gay. We all wanted to see cool character defining moments and shit she did, not some forced narrative and even more vague Destiny lore.
-
Edited by gizzamaluke: 7/12/2018 9:51:39 PMThen why isn't the title of the OP something more like, "The Bray Comics Sucked" or "Bungie Sucks at Story Telling"? Seems pretty obvious that this isn't just about a lack of character development and/or disappointment in vague lore.
-
He’s saying they suck BECAUSE of the forcing of diversity.
-
And you're saying they suck because the writing is bad... And I'm saying the diversity only feels "FORCED" if you have a problem with it.
-
No the writing is bad because they try to shove irrelevant crap in it. If you can’t see what the problem is then you’re the problem.
