The real danger comes from staring at the sun past the small time window the eclipse is occurring. If you keep looking as the sun is revealed again, permanent damage can and will be done to your retinas.
Sunglasses do not work. Only certain eclipse glasses do, so one must be careful purchasing cheap imitations. Hasn't been confirmed if welding masks or goggles will suffice either. If you value your sight, be smart people.
