Despite it being the beta shouldn't it still be a fairly accurate representation of the game?... can't be that different can it?

Actually yes. With how long it takes to get games approved to download on consoles, this version of the game is already probably a month old. And it's the last couple months (June, July. August) where most of the fine tuning (aka weapon and ability damage/speed/etc) will take place.
