Magnum out of his back pocket.

(Daniel wasn't breaking cover that easily. He put on a nervous voice and flicked his eyes between the door and the gun.) "I...I....." (He legged it)

"...Smart man." He turned to his flank aiming the gun at whatever was there.

(And there wasn't anyone there and it occurred to him he was paranoid, and with that knowlage, probably formed he conclusion he had just threatened to kill a perfectly respectable insurance salesman)
