People spent $10 on that book, and people were finding a way to get past the payment of it and get it for free. So, they fixed it to make sure that the people who did end up buying it didn't waste their money.
Plus, BALANCING and PAYMENT are 2 very different things! Balancing is a lot more touchy, and a lot more complicated.
