Because he was older why Maul was at his prime, at his apex. His talent with a saber went basically unmatched by any other Jedi/Sith during the time. He had spent his whole life training for this one moment, the moment he would finally came face to face with a Jedi.
Yes that maybe true, however Maul was a Sith nonetheless, he's only Advantage was the double hilt lightsaber, and Double hilts were extremely rare, pretty much a legend around that era... I'm guessing
I mean who trains to fight someone with a double hilt? But anyways my theory why Qui-Gon lost to Darth Maul is:
When up against A double Hilt lightsaber, just like normal duels you watch your opponents moves and predict it. The Double hilt is dangerous when your watching one side of the saber you have to watch out for the other side making difficult to fight against, especially for the un-trained or slow reflexes. Pretty much against a Master using two lightsaber.
Qui-Gon judging from his LightSaber colour is a Consular Jedi, and die hard fans out there know that Consular Jedi are the wises and more force sensitive then any other rank. Qui-Gon lost because he was out match from the beginning, Darth Maul is clearly a striker. Qui-Gon die because he was out matched and when left alone he died. Obi-Wan defeated Darth Maul... Seems like stupid luck when he defeated Darth Maul but manages to go head to head with him because he was a Jedi-Guardian heavily focus of LightSaber striking.
So in other words Qui-Gon was out-matched and out-skilled from the beginning. Yoda is different he's live for over 700 years he obviously master plentiful techniques...
Trust me age doesn't matter... Darth Sidious and Yoda Proves that...
First of all, you should look at them based on their fighting style, not as "Striker" and what not.
Second of all, most Jedi used a blue crystal.
Third of all, Maul is possibly one of the best duelists in the Star Wars universe and mastered a difficult yet extremely deadly combat style. His whole life was dedicated to this one moment. Obi Wan only won because Maul thought that he already had.
What!? Qui-Gon's LightSaber was Green?
And I doubt Darth Maul was pumping iron all day and become the best duelist, I bet the only reason why he use the double edge was his ambitious and cocky way to defeat anyone just with a different style of fighting technique, use a Double hilt means twice more stamina.
If you see the clone wars tv series, Like all Sith their once in a life time moment is to kill their master and become a Sith lord himself...
And (spoiler alert) even he still couldn't match up Darth Sidious, and after seeing Count Dooku in action I bet he could defeat Darth Maul, Double Edge is meant to be intimidate and overthrow your enemy with a faster sword movement.
Obi-wan could've never defeated Count Dooku...
Darth Maul is practically equalivent to Venturess, based on all the evidence.
Count Dooku because of his curved hilt was a Master Duelist...
I'm sorry but you're wrong. The double bladed lightsaber, when paired with the correct lightsaber form, was superior to most other forms of combat. And yes, Darth Maul spent almost his entire life training to kill Jedi. While I'm not a particular fan of the series, TCW really showed how skilled he was.
