But shards and energy can traded for glimmer and motes. Making those year one mats have a use in year two

Just completing TWO public events gets you at least EIGHT motes. Doing a full raid you'll bet you around twelve. An hour or so for twelve, or five minutes for eight... Raiding for something so small such as motes is a waste of time.

CE should take you a maximum of 20 mimutes tops

For real... I burn through like 50 a day just feeding them to gear.

The point is that you can trade them in for something useful. But etheric light can't even though it is much harder to get
