Why should I invest more time in a scummy class than I need to for the bare minimum amount needed to be credible.

Because its not scummy. I started with a titan main. Switched to main a lock about Feb. I now main my hunter because it's so much more fun. Do I still love my titan and warlock? Absolutely. I don't call any class scummy. All classes have their scummy users. Is what it is.
