Thorn was always thorn. Dredgen Yor's previous self merely saw it as a rose and it fed off his aggression slowly corrupting him. It wasn't until he was completely corrupt and became Dredgen Yor did he see the gun for what it was and at that point he embraced it.

I only brought that idea up seeing as how Thorn is the only gun linked to Last Word so far. Personally I don't believe that idea myself
