Bungie didn't sell it, Microsoft owned the rights to it and when bungie's contract was up they gladly left.

Not true, 343 is made up from people at bungie. Microsoft offered them a contract and those people took it. Don't think everyone liked the pairing up with Activision so a huge number left.
