Red Crystals aren't always synthetic. There's a known crystal type known as a Kaiburr Crystal, that naturally produces a red-beamed blade. The reason so many Jedi use Blue or Green crystals is because those are the most frequently occurring crystals in the caves of Ilium.

There was a Jedi that used a red crystal. Don't know the name though.
