I killed Ornstein first, let him charge at you from far away to split the two and hit him with two-handed blows til he drops then Smough is pretty easy by himself. I never used an ally when I played either

It's not so bad once you get used to it.

Are you on xbox or PS? Either way just get full havol armor and use the shield, summon knight solair and kill Smough first. Don't know about you but I blocked every single one of super Ornstein's attacks in NG+ without running out of stamina and I had full havol and havols shield.
