He knows it's a theory, but it is a [i]fact[/i] that the theory happened in the past and continues to happen.

The criteria for scientific fact is stupidly high. It would be better and more accurate to say it is extremely likely that it happened in the past and continues to happen. (I believe this) and yes I'm just speaking from a philosophy of science perspective
