There is very little difference between getting a random drop at some point in your game than purchasing a weapon from xur.
We all have seen players in a crucible match, do terrible, and still get dropped a great weapon. There is no, and I do mean no, earning in this game. It is all luck!
It's just a game. Have fun, and enjoy whatever happens.

Luck is when preparation meets opportunity

I can agree with you on that, in a "real life" situation. But as far as this game goes, what preparation is needed to get a drop from a boss fight or opening a box in a raid? My clan helped a guy with his first character yesterday. He got up to level 26. We brought him into a normal VOG and he pulled a Gjally out of the gorgon box. Not much prep for that. I was happy to see him get it.

That's patently untrue. My friend got his first vex by joining a nearly finished raid and being carried. Luck is a random connection of events that are favorable to you.
