It'll click man. Right before the third boss the combat was really starting to click for me last night. I tore through all the enemies then took down the third boss my first try! Stick with it!

I'm stuck in that first city still! Why give me a gun if you don't give me bullets?! :P but I haven't given it my full attention yet. Too mentally exhausted afterwork so I just play the mindless games, like destiny :) no effort there!

Honesty i only use my gun to parry now. I don't think they are initially designed to be a main source of dishing out damage. More a defensive tool. You'd be better off focusing on mastering crowd control, dodging mechanics and timing your strikes. Hunters axe is great for new players btw

Thanks! Can't remember what the name of the weapon was that I got. Looks like a giant scythe when I press L1. Like I said haven't put a ton of time in :) had been thinking of starting over and trying a different weapon.
