The looking cool part is easy. Would you like a Halo-esque looking helmet?
Okay, so with abilities I can offer the usual damage reduction and protection. I'll plate the inner side too, so you'll need at least a few shots with a .50 cal to the head to feel it. Regular sword and other melee weapon strikes would be useless, unless fixed with armour busting enhancements... Won't name them. Even armour piercing rounds or arrows will have a tough time getting through with its next ability.
Personalized forcefield allows for a steady current of energy to flow and be shaped into fields surrounding the users helmet and body. Although this can be destabilized and stopped, the helmet comes with built in generators to always power the helmet's field. The forcefield will not stop all blows, but will cushion them at least and will make the user resistant to most projectiles while the shield is active. Again, the body shield can be destabilized after sustaining too much damage.
My special touch is the Equinox smart system. Not only does it interconnect with your nerves and brain via runes and some electric wave interaction, the Helmet perceives vision much keener than regular vision. HUD will keep track of shield status, and due to interconnection with brain, will keep track of weapons and other various combat applications.
Helmet looks to be like an EVA spartan helm, with the whole glass visor having a Ying yang drawn on it, colour and all.
I can redo how it looks, and the abilities if you want.
