By definition a Poncho is not a cloak, as shown above, a poncho, or original ponchos, did not have hoods, and is a one layered sheet of cloth, with patterns and designs on it. And yes, Chief has a knife, as seen above.

But he didn't use it until halo 4 so...

Still used it. And he used it with style. Technically Chief doesn't punch his enemies, he hits them with his gun.
