There are things like the moon, sun, radiation, spinning etcetera which cause wind on the Earth. There is a limit to how much energy could be extracted from these processes through the wind. The wind is a renewable resource, but has finite dimensions.

I'm pretty sure if the sun went out or the earth stopped spinning there would be bigger things to worry about than if the windmill still spins

I'm backing you up on this one. Wind is a source of energy. The law of conservation of energy says that energy cannot be created or destroyed, thus implying that there is a finite amount of energy. The same thing that he is saying about wind applies to solar energy as well. The more energy from the sun that we turn into electricity, the less energy is being transformed into heat. It would take a lot of solar panels to make a difference, but we can't just place as many as we want and expect no change.
