Do you like the "long maps" (Moon and Mars)?

I prefer the smaller maps where there is doom around every corner and you find yourself in a maelstrom of killing (Earth Maps!). Since I am fairly new to gaming, its taken a while to get used to the long/vehicle type maps, but even as I get better at them I find them a bit boring somehow. What do you all think?

  • Don't let Destiny ruin your opinion of big maps. Destiny fails to make the map feel full because it's a large arena with only a couple of hot zones, and not enough players per time. 6v6 isn't enough for Bastion or First Light. Big map, when done right, are the best thing about multiplayer games. The Battlefield series makes their money on having large maps with lots of players. Sand trap, Valhalla, and Coagulation are just some of the large maps from Halo that made the multiplayer in that game so much fun, because they were done right

    • My two cents: I think the main problem with these two maps is the map layout. These is nothing wrong with "long maps" I just think these need to be designed better. On both First Light and Bastion the vehicles are mostly relegated to the outsides of the map. The center of the map is closed off and caters to mid range to close combat. This means if you want to use a vehicle or snipe you are mostly picking off new spawns or people randomly wandering out of the middle. With no access to the central area and a small number of vehicles this really limits a good snipers ability to cover his team or lots of intense vehicle on vehicle action. I am not sure who all played Halo: Reach but there were several really fun "long maps". Forge World (image linked above) was one of my favorites. It was mostly a big open valley with spawn bases on either end. There were plenty of vehicles and the middle of the map was always full of large amounts of destruction. Around the edges of the map there were tunnels that allowed for flanking and the mid to close range combat. A good sniper could cover most of the map but was never untouchable and the big open area in the middle was a blast destroying people with a tank. The way First Light and Bastion are currently laid out it just seems to make the vehicles / sniper strategy mostly an after thought. Not that you can't get kills or that people can't use the strategies effectively - just that it is seems to be more effective to go into the middle and stick to mid to close range fighting. The only reason I enjoy playing them is because it is a change a pace, just something different since there aren't that many maps to begin with.

      • I equate the big maps to the story missions that spawn you miles away from where you need to be, you hop on a sparrow for a couple of minutes before needing to pull your gun out, why? What is the point of that? Same thing with the big maps, you have to hop on a sparrow just to get to the closest capture point at the start of the game. They could either adjust spawns or bring in the extremities of the map, but there is still gonna be more time getting somewhere than action... Unless you can get to a point and hold it down, then action keeps finding you. But that brings us back to the issue that bigger maps end up in everyone pretty much fighting in the same small area (that at least moves around he Moon map, most of the action is at B on Mars), or snipers watching the lanes you need to use to get somewhere. I enjoy battlefield, I have no issue with big maps, but they just don't play well in Destiny, so they are badly designed IMO.

        • No. I stick to control almost exclusively, so I'll confess my experience probably isn't universal. That being said... 1. Half the map may as well not even be there, because people are only going to bother with the inner zones. 2. People are only bothering with the inner zones, but you re-spawn at the edge of the map, which means you have to waste time hopping on and off a sparrow just to get back into the action. 3. Wanna snipe? Good luck, because...well, just look at points 1 and 2. 4. Vehicles? AWESOME!!!...or it would be, except everybody's going to...wait for it...the inner zones. 5. Turrets? AWESOME!!! Just overlook the fact that they're placed in awkward areas with limited scope where no one is ever going to be. 6. Matches on these maps just seem to go on and on FOOOOOREEEEEVEEEEER. It's not good if you're like me and only really care about doing bounties and then moving on to something you enjoy more.

        • I've taken a liking to sniping lately and I have always been a fan of Scout rifles. I like longer site lines, so yeah, I like those maps. The unfortunate thing is that whenever I play in the Crucible, I always end up on Mars (BW, or firebase) or Earth and rarely will I get Shores of Time. The other two seem to only exist in the Combined Arms playlist now.

          • Noooooooo. I despise those maps. It turns the game into a snipe - fest that goes as long as the timer will allow. All I end up doing is digging snipers out of their little hidey holes for the entire match. Those maps always drag on and on and on....

I love them. Probably because I almost never see them so it's like Christmas when I do. Personally I think that there should a linear map playlist where every map plays one after the other. Not this random ish where you can play for hours and only come across 2 maps. Throw in a vote system maybe while you're at it.

Started a new topic: What is your map size preference?

            • No. People just sit in the back of the map and snipe. Makes for a slow game.

            • Big maps are better, small maps just get on my boobies when I've got a poo team and they just run round the same corner to get killed by the same people

            • Even on the "big" maps 50% of the map at least isn't utilized. Also, I really am not a fan of getting sniped from a mile away from some dude camping not playing the objectives.

            • I was actually thinking the other day that I wished they had more big maps. They definitely shouldn't make huge open spaces like on the moon map though. You really need line-of-sight breaks and general cover on a big map.

            • I prefer more open long range maps that allow snipers room to breathe.

I would love the big maps if it weren't for enclosed spaces at control zones where everyone just camps and vehicles. I would love to see Bungie make Blood Gulch in Destiny with no vehicles.

            • I like em, every now and then I'm in a sniping mood. What I do wish, however, is that they would make Asylum a Clash or Control map. I know it's smaller, but the chaos would be epic, and it's one of the best looking maps (in my opinion). It's the only one that makes you feel like your in an abandoned city, rather than an old industrial area. That's what I think we need, more city like maps. After all, they overtook our cities, right? Not just our power plants.

            • Don't like em. Too big, but not quite big enough to justify vehicles, and there's little incentive use them aside from getting around quicker. I feel like vehicles should be used against each other, like a Twisted Metal kind of thing. But despite the map size, there's not enough room, or enough vehicles available.

            • I like them both but IMO First Light (Moon) has a bit too much open space and I sometimes find myself getting sniped the instant I spawn because of the camp spots along the outer edge.

            • eh, I like them because its a bit slower faced (in other words no shotgun or fusion rifle spam). But there's a lot of snipers which isnt bad but they have a lot of ammo to carry around. And the vehicles, I cant seem to get into a team who knows how to get rid of them or use them to our advantage. I like the big maps because there's room for more primary weapon use. in other words, more gunfights instead of ohk bs.

            • I think the design and concept is fine, but 6v6 isn't enough for that size of a map.
