I think it's dumb to be proud/ashamed of anything one has no conscious control over, people should be judged by their achievements and character. Race/gender/whatever does play a part in shaping character, but not a large enough one to really mean anything.
The only time I think it's valid to think that way is when the group in question is actively oppressed and so adopts that attitude as a form of retaliation. But once the stigma goes away there is no reason for it.
