The unvaulting timeline is not going to work out.

To be quite honest, without trying to sound too negative, the pre-production phase of 4 months in addition to the estimated 12 month actual development phase is not going to work out for the destiny community. I mean atleast they finally understood that we are still there and we still want destiny content, but i am almost certain that their thin lineup doing pre-production simply because they keep trying to revive the already dead horse, which is marathon, is not going to be enough. They keep stating that we should all support each other in the destiny and the marathon community. How about we, the paying customers, decide which one of the thousands of games that are available to all of us, we want to buy and play. It wasnt just the destiny community that clearly screamed into bungies face, that marathon aint it. The literal whole internet did not like that game (except for certain "journalists"). Its artstyle is hit or miss, the gamemode is niche, the gameplay is niche. The entire game fundamentally (sadly) is not fun. And we play games to have fun. Atleast some of us do. Please realize that the marathon situation isnt remotely comparable to the rocky destiny 2 launch (which was instead fixable). D2 launched with many flaws, yes. BUT the fundamental game was great. The looter shooter aspect, the gunplay, the general gameplay, the artstyle, the beloved universe had a strong foundation, the story was rich and the pvp/pve combination with raids etc. in the first person perspective is completely unique. Everyone knew what was wrong with D2. Mainly it was random rolls were needed, we didnt like double primary and we needed content. Quality content. We needed grind. We needed depth. All that was fixed with forsaken. You can not translate that to marathon because the entire fundament of that game is flawed. Almost noone liked any of the features in that game. Bungie has already almost wasted a year of dev time trying to revive that lost cause. Now us destiny players almost lost our home but yet we still are asked to remain patient. I do not believe that there will be a massive destiny community anymore when the unvaulting is set to happen. Most of us have already found a new home, the other remaining players will mostly follow soon aswell. We saw how tiny passionate groups of devs have used AI to do all the unvaulting in a fraction of time already. Not triple A polish, not bug free, not perfect by any means and also not integrated into the live version but that should not be THAT big of an issue. In what world does a former behemoth studio like Bungie plan to ship deleted content which only needs some lighting updates, integration problems solved and bug fixing in a timespan of 16 months? We do not need perfection to the tiniest detail. We need quick results to open the door for future NEW content. The timeline suggests that either only a tiny deveolper lineup will execute the unvaulting or they are trying way too hard on perfecting unnecessary details while pumping money into marathon. Even if there is a D3 on the horizon. That bridges gap must be closed. By supporting the current game with content. Thats how live service works. Bringing back old stuff is not going to bridge the potential 5-6 year gap when a D3 launch would be potentially possible. I know, i know, pre-production doesnt need a lot of staff, i read all that, i call that bs, sorry. I simply think that the unvaulting needs to happen in the next months to have a measurable effect on the franchise. The pre-production phase just feels like another "we need all the remaining devs trying to revive marathon" which will never be a sustainable game, type of excuse. Bringing back old content which partly already got updated to the new engine should not take over a year. It simply should not. In addition, is bringing back all the old stuff even enough for us long time players? It is not. Frankly i played at those times, i played all the content every day. And most of the remaining players who are or were hardcore D2 players will be the same. It will be nice for some to revisit those activities but its nothing to bring respectable amounts of new players or retention back and it will also not fix any of that broken trust if it will happen in 2028. Slapping a bandaid over that flesh wound will merely ease the pain. I doubt that the general sentiment will change drastically. And that would be fine if new content would quickly follow. But i only see a "maybe D1 remaster in 2029/2030 and a maybe D3 in 2032" Like i stated in my first sentence, not trying to be negative nancy but my rose tinted glasses have been off for a while now and thats just an objective observation by me. Even if they outsource a Destiny 1 remake in the meantime, that wont be done until 2029/2030 at the earliest. An actual remake or remaster with a pc port would actually take time. Bungie you are serving a live service audience here, remember the D1 "content drought"? That was like 7 months. People who are used to content flow will leave and not turn back. Even 7 months were too long for a majority of players. Just my 2 cents as someone who was there from the beginning and still loves the franchise while objectively losing hope for its future if Bungie keeps trying to make us help them reviving a dead horse instead of letting it die in favor of the billion dollar franchise that we all loved...

  • Every cent and second wasted on Marathon takes a little away from Destiny’s comeback actually happening. Until they fully admit defeat and move forward - Destiny ain’t going no where.

  • I think the cliffhanger is a good path to a D3. I know people want their old content back, but how long will you actually play beyond nostalgia. If they were going to put time and effort into anything it needs to be a new game, in a new engine, nice and fresh continuing the story where it left off. Its like until the announced vaulting of content everyone forgot how hard it was to get someone into an old raid, especially leviathan raids. Nope, I'd rather they skip the unvaulting if it takes that long and invest in a new D3. Will it take long, yup, but better than getting something people will play for only a few months until the nostalgia wears off

  • There's been longer gaps in-between popular game series... Dead space Fable Doom Final fantasy I'm still waiting for the next twisted metal... Some of the metal gear games took forever... Diablo... There's more than one fish in the see as they say ... It's been proven time and time again... With destiny... It's been the ritual for years... The true fans will stay and all the leaches will leave I call that a win... Post...

  • I suspect Bungie and Sony are having one last roll of the dice with Marathon. I think it sold okay and that’s why they still believe it has potential. In terms of Destiny, I was always fine with the idea of having a long gap between D2 and D3. I think the IP needs a big refresh to correct problems of the past and move forwards. Returning vaulted content and a D1 remaster are things I was hoping for, but not expecting. Hopefully they are stepping stones to bigger things. Considering the circumstances at Bungie HQ, I’m happy with the plan they’ve put forward.

  • This is the slowest, most painful death of a studio OF ALL TIME. Bungie and the current player base are on the hardest copium ever created. Marathon is dead and Destiny is NEVER returning. At best D2 will be a "restored" but there's no long term future here. No Man's Sky this aint. These copium addicts are fooling themselves.

    • I agree with everything you wrote. Bungie really needs to deliver something in the short term if they want to keep players engaged. My hope is that they'll decide to unvault the content in phases over the course of next year, with the final pieces of content coming in early 2028. Though I'm sure people will try to dismiss your post as "complaining" or "being ungrateful". What people don't understand is that it's not the unvaulting itself that we're taking issue with, it's how they're going about it.

      • If you actually read the blog post, they state that they plan on a celebration update or series of updates, current leadership wouldn't be stupid enough to have a full year of zero content. They still have a lot of stuff from the other half of the update that would have been Destiny Infinity (or whatever that was gonna be called) that ended up being scrapped and turned into Monument. I get everyone is all gloom and doom because of all the BS in the past, but instead of being like that, maybe you should wait and see instead of constantly demanding an endless stream of content; that's how we got so many lame seasons and reskins/recolors of weapons over and over again. Just be patient and play some other games for awhile until we hear more.

        • Twelve months of content drought with no seasonal events such fotl, solstice and such won't make players stay. The least they can do is rerunning seasonal events with some rewards as bread crumbs to keep people playing

          • Fair, but let’s say they could really deliver the unvaulting in a few months, why choose not to? From a business perspective there is absolutely 0 incentive. The longer it takes to ship the more it costs them, it is testing the patience of a community who’s already been abused and they run the risk of losing some part of the community. It’s not making what comes next come any faster, which delays revenues. While I’m as disappointed as the next guardian about the delay I see no reason to believe they are not genuinely trying their best.

            • 1. We’re lucky to have the game back at all since Sony is known doe sitting on IPs and letting them collect dust to keep what’s left of the IPs market value. 2. The update will be free and costs us nothing, it’s no different than playing the game when MoT released. People still played it, and I don’t see why things are different now. People should be excited, not complaining. 3. Bungie also talked about releasing old projects that never made it into the game. So it’s new content for us, content we would’ve never seen prior to all of this. They also mentioned wanting to release bug fixes and updates between now and the release of the unvaulting. People need to just relax and be patient.

There's no timeline. Made up by doomers, agitators, and malcontents. Funny how we made it through this rough spot and some people just want Bungie to continue with drip fed, low quality content. A rushed dev cycle... often... buggy and broken. Sry 😢... That's finito. Go play something else or quit, I really don't care. 😇👍💠

              • The Marathon and Destiny 2 launches aren’t remotely comparable. Destiny 2 had the biggest console video game launch week of 2017 and set a record Day-1 performance on the PlayStation Store. D2 had over 1.2 million concurrent players on console during its launch week and maintained more than 1 million concurrent players for eight consecutive days. I don’t have similar data for Marathon but comparing the Steam concurrent player peaks shows 316,000 for Destiny 2 (currently 20,000) and 88,000 for Marathon (currently 1,800). Marathon isn’t remotely close to the success Destiny 2 had within a similar timeframe. Anyone trying to suggest Marathon is likely to go on to great success based on the previous performance of either Destiny or Destiny 2 is severely deluded and should seek the help of a qualified mental health practitioner.
