Vault pressure is a big issue in the game that has been plaguing it since random rolls.
Simply adding vault space is like applying a band aid on a gunshot wound.
What i propose would reduce the vault to consist of singular versions of items instead of tens of duplicates.
Its a merger between the crafting system in place and the classic looting system that the game has relied on all these years.
What i suggest is the following:
Allow us to extract properties from items.
These will contribute to a collection pool for said items.
Extracting a perk will dismantle the item and also give you dismantle materials alongside the selected perk/stat/stat tuning.
Add tier 6:
Furthermore i would introduce tier 6 alongside armor up-tiering for this system. you'll need to fully masterwork a gear piece to be able to upgrade to tier 6 and they don't drop naturally. These tier 6 items will gain access to the collected pool of perks/stats/stat tuning to select from alongside the perks they came with at a previous tier.
Think standard destiny ui but the light.gg (see img1) perk/stat list consisting of those you collected (if the list gets to long it'll just have a scroll bar so it doesn't overlap the mod sockets). Since this relies on many systems already in place the hardest job will be software for tracking the collected properties for each item and to inject it into any t6 version of said item and making sure the game doesn't break in the process.
What about exotics?:
Exotics could also benefit from it. how many times did you get a powerhouse roll of an, exotic only to get a useless tertiary stat. this system allows the extraction of both from different duplicates and for you to make your ideal stat roll version of it. no more 100 ergo sums, 100 exotic class items or 10 version of the same exotic with different stat archetypes/tertiary stats. every version will be combinable in a single one. exotics acquired from collections will also have access to those extracted properties after being fully master-worked.
Inventory management:
Alongside this i would introduce an auto-dismantle toggle in settings that dismantles any item that can't contribute any property to your collection. the way this would look is as follows: the item will show up on the side of your screen but greyed out. under it you'll see an arrow pointing to the dismantle materials gained from it. the more items that are dismantled the higher the column above the arrow and the higher the amount of received materials under it. (see img2)
New perk/stats:
Items that you've already acquired but havent gotten one of the properties from will have a blue upper right corner with a checkmark signifying you have this item but can still extract a property from it. (see img3)
If you then inspect the item you would see a blue ring around it with a + symbol to show what perk(s)/stat(s)/tuning you don't have yet. (see img4). You would then hold right click that perk to extract it effectively destroying the item in the process. Extracting can be done with all properties you don't have yet: all perks, armor archetypes, tertiary stat increases and stat tuning options.
this way the total max vault slots ever required should be every single legendary and exotic gear piece for al classes in-game +100 extra for materials etc. alongside this vault increase we obviously need a material cap increase, glimmer to 7 777 777, enhancement prisms, shards and alloys to 9999 with overflowing to a new stack enabled to mirror the cores.
I know bungie is likely swamped with massive tasks and a colossal workload, but i think this would help for the future of the game and fit's destiny's style. it will bring bad luck protection, raise the odds of getting what you want from weapons with colossal perk pools like for example the fortissimo, and give collectors 1 more thing to grind for. this system should not almost completely erasing the grind like the crafting system did since it still requires you to actually loot the perks and stats you want, so it still relies on the base game rng.
Let me know in the comments if this type of system would fit within destiny 2 and what improvements could be made.
(p.s. in the extremely unlikely event someone from bungie sees this post and would like to use the idea you're free to do so)
